News And Notes 8/2: Timmy Jernigan Disruptive

Veterans get off day. Perriman sits with knee bruise, Dumervil has tendinitis, other injury updates.

Timmy Jernigan made sure everyone knew where he was during Sunday’s practice.

The second-year defender was a disruptive force in the middle of the defensive line, pushing his way into the backfield on multiple occasions. He then let the offensive linemen know he got the best of them.

On one occasion, Jernigan slipped through the line to stuff running back Lorenzo Taliaferro for a loss. Jernigan made the stop and then let out a yell along with a little dance move.

A couple plays later, he pushed center Jeremy Zuttah to the ground and applied pressure to quarterback Joe Flacco . Jernigan and Zuttah got in each other’s faces, but they quickly went back to their respective huddles without a scuffle.

It was a strong all-around day from the defensive tackle who is slated to replace perennial Pro Bowler Haloti Ngata. It is also worth noting that Jernigan’s strong practice came on a day where starting guard Marshal Yanda and Kelechi Osemele both had the day off.

Here were some other notes:

- Head Coach John Harbaugh gave several veterans a rest day, which is standard during camp. Yanda, Osemele, Steve Smith Sr. , Terrell Suggs , Chris Canty , Daryl Smith and Justin Forsett all sat out Sunday’s practice.

- Rookie receiver Breshad Perriman continues to sit out with a knee injury he suffered during the first practice. Harbaugh said the injury isn’t serious, but the Ravens want to make sure he’s healthy before getting him back on the field. Outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil didn’t practice again because of tendinitis. Harbaugh said the veteran pass rusher won’t return until he’s 100 percent, but he’s expected to be fine.

- Cornerback Rashaan Melvin also sat out practice after tweaking his hamstring Saturday. Fellow cornerback Tray Walker also hurt his hamstring.

- The defense won practice for the second straight day. The Ravens have a scoring system to track who wins each day, and the defense came out on top by a final score of 70-68. The outcome came down to the final few minutes of practice, and both sides were arguing about why they deserved to get the points.

- Quarterback Joe Flacco carved up the defense during a red-zone seven-on-seven drill. He connected with both Marlon Brown and Kamar Aiken for touchdowns.

- Rookie running back Buck Allen had another strong showing. He displayed good vision carrying the ball out of the backfield, and his hands are as good as advertised. Allen scored a touchdown on a screen pass over the middle of the field, and he took advantage of some first-team reps with Forsett resting.

- Linebacker C.J. Mosley isn’t shying away from contact after offseason wrist surgery. He wears a protective brace on his left arm, but he’s still initiating contact whenever he has a chance.

- Safety Will Hill continues to make plays and put himself in good position around the football. He broke up a potential touchdown pass from Flacco to wide receiver Michael Campanaro in the back of the end zone, and he also delivered a big hit on Taliaferro on the sidelines. The hit from Hill took the 225-pound running back off his feet.

- Defensive lineman DeAngelo Tyson came up with an interception off quarterback Matt Schaub near the end of practice. Tyson made an athletic play to bat down the pass and snag it for the interception.

- Harbaugh is testing his young returners during practice. The head coach is trying to put the pressure on them by getting in their faces as they’re trying to field punts. He ran in front of both Campanaro and DeAndre Carter as they were fielding punts, flailing his arms to distract them. Both caught the punts cleanly.

Late For Work 8/3: Two WRs Standing Out Among 12-Man Competition

Elam expected to miss season. Playing it safe with Dumervil. Campanaro takes up yoga. 3-headed monster.

Two WRs Standing Out Among 12-Man Competition

This wide receiver competition is living up to its billing.

The Ravens have a whopping 12 receivers on the roster now, and none can afford to blink without the threat of being outshined by his teammate. Well, no one except Steve Smith Sr. The 15-year veteran’s spot as the top dog is secure, and he’s been connecting with quarterback Joe Flacco an awful lot.

Among the remaining 11, a couple are starting to separate from the pack through the first days of practice. The two are Kamar Aiken and Jeremy Butler , according to ESPN’s Jamison Hensley.

“Aiken made difficult grabs on two Matt Schaub passes that sailed behind him while running across the middle,” Hensley wrote after Saturday’s practice. “Butler made another one-handed reception (the second straight day he's done so), and he pulled in a nice sideline catch from Schaub.”

And that was written before Aiken came up with this beauty in Sunday’s practice:

Oh, don’t get it twisted. This thing isn’t over yet. It’s just that Aiken and Butler took advantage of their reps with first-round pick Breshad Perriman sitting out with a bruised knee (he’s considered day-to-day) and Marlon Brown was sidelined Saturday with a back injury (he was back Sunday).

Of the dozen receivers on the 90-man roster, only half are expected to make the cut to 53 on Sept. 5, says Hensley. The makeup of the group is unique. Outside of Smith Sr., nobody is older than 26 years old.

“The Ravens' receiving group is composed of one Pro Bowl player (Smith), two rookie draft picks (Perriman and Darren Waller ), two returning backups (Brown and Michael Campanaro ), two veterans who previously played elsewhere in the league (Aiken and Aldrick Robinson ), two undrafted rookies (DeAndre Carter and Daniel Brown ), one first-year player coming off injured reserve (Butler) and two converted receivers (Tom Nelson was a safety and Trent Steelman was a college quarterback),” wrote Hensley.

Should fans start to worry about Perriman now that he’s missed three straight days of practice, which is more than initially thought? In terms of his injury, it really does seem like he will be fine even if it takes a couple more days to get back on the field.

“Although the injury isn't considered major, sources said it may sideline the speedy first-round draft pick longer than the Ravens had initially hoped and he could be out as long as a week,” reported The Baltimore Sun’s Aaron Wilson.

So his health should be fine, but missing time does hurt the rookie in other ways.

He is missing valuable reps that would help get a better feel for the offense and technique, and develop more chemistry with Flacco. Also, giving precious reps to his competition allows them to outshine him like Aiken and Butler did this weekend.

“At the end of the day, he needs to practice as much as he can,” Offensive Coordinator Marc Trestman said. “It’s not his fault that he’s not practicing …but you can’t overestimate the importance of him being on the football field, and hopefully, he’ll be back as soon as possible, because he needs to practice, he needs to work, and he needs to work on the timing. That’s the obvious, and when he’s not there, he can’t do it.

“Ultimately, we need to get him out here as soon as we can, and as soon as the doctors and the trainers OK that, he’ll be back on the field and we’ll get him back up to speed.”

Once Perriman does return, expect him to use size and blazing speedy to make more grabs like these to show Aiken and Butler that this competition isn’t over.

:snoop:

And all i been hearing from camp is how dominant he looked

2nd year in a row he suffers a season ending injury before the 1 st preseason game :mjcry:

Edit: Now they're saying its a 12 week injury which means he might only miss half the season and could be back after week 8 :patrice:

I don't know if he's needed, but I'd have him back. One of my favourite players when he played for us.

:wow:

:banderas:2nd best play that led up to our Super Bowl that post season that post season.

Only only one topping that was the Jacoby catch

Pollard acknowledges that the Ravens are close to winning a Super Bowl, and he could be the missing piece. (really good to hear this, especially from a guy who has every right to hate our team):blessed:

harbaugh is too stubborn tho, If he does come back Ozzie is going to be the one to make it happen

It's a long shot, but Im sure 90% of Ravens fans would want to have this cat back in our uniform

Bernard Pollard wants to return to Baltimore
Bernard is my nikka and shouldve been a pro bowler in 2012 but there is ZERO chance we bring him back

him and Ed Reed are the 2 guys Harbs wanted off the team the most and he was one of the leaders of the mutiny when the team refused to practice in pads
