Can someone explain to me why relievers are so volatile from year to year?

I see guys like Trivino and Treinen this season and they are not nearly as good as they were last season

High variance for relief pitchers. They pitch relatively small number of innings so if they have a bad stretch it's hard for their counting numbers to look dominant. The league also gets smarter. I know treinen gets a lot of swings with pitches out of the zone so if batters are chasing less, he has to make better pitches in the zone and those get hit.

This, hitters aren’t expanding the zone and putting the calls more in the umps hands.

Because you don’t account for all the extra pitches they throw while warming up when they don’t get into the game.
