1811 German Coast Uprising

Orleans Territory (Now known as Louisiana)

The 1811 German Coast Uprising was the largest "slave" uprising in U.S. history. The uprising began in a sugar plantation near present-day LaPlace on the German Coast and ended near the city of New Orleans. During the 25 mile trek, although armed only with hand tools(pikes, hoes and axes), the freedom fighters amassed between 200-500 enslaved men, burned five plantation houses (three completely), several sugarhouses, crops and killed 2 white men.

As you should be able to imagine, as the freedom fighters moved from plantation to plantation liberating and burning, most of the enslaved "negroes" refused to join their ranks. Some of these COWARDLY N1GGERS even warned their enslavers of the coming revolt and fought against the freedom fighters to save their enslavers property, as is the case of a N1GGER named Bazile who fought one of the fires set by the freedom fighters and saved the Meuillion house (the home of the the largest and wealthiest plantation on the German Coast) from burning to the ground.

One of the leaders of the revolt was Charles Deslondes.

Since 1995 the African American History Alliance of Louisiana has led an annual commemoration in January of the uprising
