Uncertain grounds
*Disney World – Some people recall taking a monorail from the Orlando airport directly to the Disney World property.
*Fred Rogers’ song, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” – Is the opening line “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood” or “It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood”? (It’s “this.” See Won't You Be My Neighbor? (Song) - The Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Archive and .)
*Jif Peanut Butter – Or was it first “Jiffy” peanut butter?
Looney Tunes or Looney Toons?
Louie Anderson – Alive and well now, but his death at some point in the past.
*Sex and the City – Was it “Sex in the City” when it first aired? That’s an alternate memory many people recall.
Shirley Temple — Death prior to 10 Feb 2014.
Mystery Science Theater — Variations of the numbers following show name (mostly 2000 or 3000, but a few recall 4000).
Henry VIII — Famous portrait of him holding a turkey leg? Reports that it’s not in this timestream.
Ghost Hunters TV show — Some remember the earliest show name as TAPS, not Ghost Hunters
Geography — Locations and sizes of New Zealand. Locations of Australia, Honduras, Japan, Manchuria, and more.

:mindblown::wtf:

can i get feedback on some of the above:lupe:

None of those strike me like this Berenstein issue does. :jbhmm:

I'd argue that most of the people consuming such literature 2-3 decades ago were children with little understanding of the nuance of language. Align that with lazy teachers and parents who never bothered to pronounce the name properly, and thus we created a sort of false collective memory. . .

I thought we talked about this before :jbhmm::leostare:

it was clearly E. not even a debate. anyone who thinks it was A the whole time is an alien :camby:

I always remembered the "A", specifically. :cpagehubie:
I remember going to the library as a kid and seeing Berenstain Bears books; I remember thinking "That's a weird way to spell that..." :bppatrice:

Here's my theory:

-The "Berenstain/Berenstein controversy has nothing to do with parallel universes. It has everything to do with how much human memory sucks.

-Memories can be susceptible to subtle manipulation. It may be harder to alter more concrete details, but it's possible to convince someone of a false memory.

(Example: you have clear memories of going to the beach as a kid and eating ice cream on the boardwalk...but was it ice cream or gelato? Didn't it taste different from normal ice cream to you? Remember the "first" time you had gelato as an adult...didn't you remember that time on the beach almost immediately?:bppatrice: )

-Names that are similar to Berenstain--mostly European Jewish names--usually end with the spelling of "-stein" (Epstein, Weinstein, Rosenstein, Einstein). I can't really think of any other name I've seen that ends in "-stain" like Berenstain. It seems like an aberration. :bpohh:
