Stretch Armstrong played this first on WKCR.

I remember hearing this and going crazy. One of my favorite diss tracks of all-time. Mad unexpected. I thought Cube would've come back with something on the level of "No Vaseline", but that didn't happen. So this was definitely on some landslide shyt.

Common said he went to Premier for the beat first, but Preme told him he couldn't do it because WC had just did some shyt with Gang Starr and that was his dude. LOL!! So he said he was like, "Let me check with Pete Rock then." I remember thinking that didn't even sound like a Pete joint, but it worked though.

Pete Rock said that it made Cube mad as fukk. I think it was effective. Although it starts out with a blatant lie - that Amerikka's Most was Cube's only good album - the rest of the diss is straight fire. But I think the thing that really sold it was that...it was Common. Common was always that well mannered nikka who grew up on the block who might give you dap, you give him dap and say "wassup breh" then as he walks away you look at your homie and be like "that nikka takes yoga classes and eats quinoa...." :patrice:

So for him to come out the gate and knock out who many considered the defacto toughest rapper in the game...shyt was dope.

You really don't know common in the context of who common as at this time.
Common was harder in real actual life at tho point in tim than cube and known as rap's venue trouble maker.
Cube ain't want no real problems and once common's affiliation became known..cube was hoping for that farakhan step in session.

I remember hearing Cube on Juan Ep, saying that Common had a good diss going at him, and saying he wished he could've put out his response record before Farrakhan called him to squash the beef.

Revisionist history will tell you that Cube was too scared to diss Common back and that this song was bigger than it was.

nikka, puh-lease.

If big Illinois was not shelved or delayed.
It would have been worse for cube.

This is before that timeline of common being all kufi'd out

in this time period. Common was one of the most hood rappers, and completely 4ch affiliated.

common was harder and got banned from rap shows and was the rapper first known.
for getting off stage and starting ruits for fighting in the venue.

your timeline is flawed on what and who common was then.

this was 87th street unAmerican caravan 4ch common.

it is a reason cube had to get this shyt squashed.

the kufi erykah badu common did not appear.
till later on reminding me of sef.

this was common sense from 87th.
unamerican caravan. UAC common.
gangbangin for real 4ch plugged affiliate common.
cube was never in no street shyt like common was.

i know so and i was there.
when bytch was debuted a Capella.
as common filled in for nas. no showing all peformances like nas did.
all his Midwest shows especially In Chicago back then.
not beefin or nuffin cause text is tone deaf. Just giving the timeline for this situation.
as this occurred before common was all natural and kufi out.

i know so.

i was there when this first ever happened and the debut for bytch in yoo took place at the DePaul nas and az show. Nas no showed and common filled in as the host.
debuting bytch in to in the process.

Yeah, I didn't wanna respond to that initial post since it was 10 yrs ago, but the Common from back then and now are two completely different artists, almost literally, since he was still going by Common Sense.

Common didn't get all completely granola and incensed out until Like Water For Chocolate. If he had stayed in his One Day It'll All Make Sense lane (his best album IMO), he'd be unquestionably top 5. But the Common from when he roasted Cube with one of the GOAT disses wasn't anything like the post-Badu version of Common.

Even years after the fact, Mack 10 had bloods on Common's bumper and Fat Joe had to calm it down.

thus showing why common was apart of hip hop and mack ten was just another wack rapper.

Common could have been on that shyt.
yet common kept it hiphop culture on wax and separated himself from wack street bullshyt in rap.

mack ten was never apart of hip hop. So Of course he had this and that doing this or that.

all because he got served snd could not defend himself on the mic. shyt was silly and sad to see common expose Mack ten so easily. As well as dispense cube.

blood are bigger..yet no one wants to get 4ch problems anywhere
common showed growth and wherewithal. As real talk. I do not see Mack ten and cube trying to battle common live.
which is why mack ten was so wack and exposed himselfdefi itvely as a culture thief. Later common would disrespect his own legacy c00n'n for a spot in Hollywood. Like cube though. To close out the irony. Where nuffin was really learned ultimately.

battle is a double sided lesson in how the mighty have fsllen. To that which they were concretely against.
