NYC (but PGH will forever be home)
I'm still perplexed on how you been coaching a team for 20 years and have no coaching tree. That shyt is super telling.

I mean, Beli is the goat and his coaching tree is trash.

But to answer your question, the Rodney's are notoriously cheap (cheapest staff/facilities in the league), so a lot of the coordinators have been unimpressive internal hires.

Knoll got them 4 wins in the 70s, but didn't do anything all of the 80s until he retired in 1991

Cowher didn't do much until he finally won in his 13th season. What coaches get to stick around for even 10 years without winning anything?

Tomlin was able to win early on, and while he hasn't won since his second season, they've never had a losing season. How many times have they lost in the past ten years when they were the favorites?
4 rings in a decade pretty much makes a coach a lifer until they're ready to go.

True, but after his last Super Bowl appearance, he had 4 losing seasons, and missed the playoffs 8 times in 12 seasons, including a 4 year playoff drought.
Unless you're Bill Belichick. I mean he didn't quite get 4 in a decade but 6 in 18 years and he still got bushed
Was coming in to mention Bill Belichick.

if the steelers fire Mike. He'll be on anew team by the next season. Meanwhile the steeler will hire a new coach that probably isn't as good.

To me really the question isn't if Mike Tomlin is good enough,. its is the dude you bring in next better?
My prediction, they ever fire Mike Tomlin the team will probably go through an trash period for a good while before getting good

Beli was 70 and there for 20 years already. That's essentially a lifer.

All that is still outweighed by 4 Super Bowl wins in a decade. The point is Tomlin and Knoll are not comparable if we're using the metric of accomplishments affording a long leash.

Bellichek isn’t the goat. He comes from the Parcells tree.

Bellichek, Coughlin, Payton - all SB winning coaches from his tree. Parcells two rings with two different QB’s with the Giants and the work he did with the Pats, Jets and Cowboys puts him at the top in my opinion. Outside of Brady, most of the guys Bellichek won those first 3 titles with were all guys Parcells brought in. Bellichek is a great coach but Brady was the primary reason for those SB.

Only Coach I’d maybe rank over Parcells would be Walsh.

Parcels won his SBs on the strength of Belichick's defense.

That’s like saying Jimmy Johnson won his 2 off the strength of Norv Turner’s offenses.

Parcells was still the HC who recognized Bellichek and gave him that opportunity. Building a good staff is just as much a part of it as the actual coaching. Parcells was a top tier personnel man as well. The man went to the AFC championship with Testeverde, and look at how he made Romo into a legit starter.

Gotta give credit where it’s due.

Parcels is a legend and is arguably a Top 5 HC, but Belichick's accomplishments in the free agency era is unmatched. Reid can catch him if he continues this run but right now Belichick sits on the throne.

I got love for Parcels though. The NE turnaround started with him and he brought a lot of good players to the team.

You’re focusing on Knoll. What about Cowher? He didn’t win until his 14th season. He had success early getting to the Super Bowl in year 4, but it would be another ten years before he got back. In that 10 years, he missed the playoffs 4 times including a 3 year drought. Belichick was let go after 2 seasons of missing the playoffs when he never had gone 2 consecutive seasons missing the playoffs his entire time there.
