The Ego has clearly shown us it's not our friend. So why do we still try to protect it?

I attended a panel discussion earlier in the year and one panel member during the Q&A referenced the internal checks and balance system between the various causes she's fighting for and her ego/insecurities/ignorance . And how she actively tries to separate actual isms-vs-interpreted isms that were based on ego/insecurities/ignorance. Difficult battle

Ego is what makes a person an individual if you don't have your own you have someone else's.

You can't maintain consciousness and autonomy without it.

People who thump their chest and say they don't have ego simply have discarded their own ego for the ego of another entity usually in the name of convenience or self preservation.

Ego should be scrutinized and balanced but never discarded it serves to protect you from predatory behavior. Give you ambition and drive.

Like everything else that makes up the human consciousness it serves a purpose. It's not all good or all bad but somewhere in between.

You can never totally get rid of the ego, that's impossible. But you can get better, a lot better, at keeping it in check.

I'm working on this since my teenage years and even if it's not easy, I'm better at it everyday. Letting things go. Anger. Pain. Resentment. Understanding how people's perceptions of me are just that: perceptions and how they can't hurt me but only the image of myself I built for the world to see.

Ego is fear. Attachment leads to suffering. Drop the attachment and fear will fade..the most liberating and useful lesson I've learned in my life.

Friends/relationships. Great opportunities. Fun. Memories. Even life. All those things have been or are capable of being lost because of our Ego. We live like puppets behind a PR crew dictating and robbing us of things just so we can satisfy these imaginary scenarios we create in our heads.

As I got older I realized maintaining your Ego is for the younger brehs because I don't have the energy anymore. Now that is not saying let people walk all over you or try to punk you or whatever. Always handle your business when necessary. But other than that I don't have the time or energy for it.

Exactly, but what people don't seem to understand is that nobody cares about such announcements, you are nobody, we all are nobody, not in an insulting sense, but generally less significant than how we view ourselves but people have a difficult time accepting such. Which makes for a weird dichotomy because if you're an egoist then you're the center of your perceptible universe anyway, so why does it matter how other people view you when you've already decided you're the most important?

Once you become self-aware you can instantly tell whether or not somebody is speaking has asked themselves "Will anybody care about this?" "Do I have any credentials to speak on this topic?" "Does this contradict my actions?" "Would I be saying this if it applied to me?"

I agree, but devil's advocate.

You cared enough to speak on it so people do care.

Being "above it all" is a manifestation of ego as well.

To posture as though one has transcended the human condition is more egoistic than speaking on haters on IG.

I also understand how deep rooted it is. It is so ingrained in us that people say things like it is a natural human trait, or it's necessary. It took me a while to let go completely because of those same things. But once I did I started enjoying my life so much better. You can do that still without letting people walk all over you or appearing soft. Asserting yourself/confidence is not interchangeable with your ego. I saw a thread on here about grown men drinking wine coolers and it was hilarious. There are millions of men who really love these fruity drinks, but won't drink it in public out of fear of appearing soft. So they settle for a hot dark brown liquor that requires scrunching up their face and exhaling when downing just one sip lol.

Keep the ego in check or else the ego will dominate you. Meditation helps a lot with this but you know, its easier said than done.
