96 - Pac died and essentially the West died with him :mjcry:
Dre was on some bullshyt in videos turning his nose up at police brutality.
Bay Area rap was declining in 97 .

:comeon:

I don't think Pac single-handedly represented us as a region, let alone a state despite his iconic status. He was from NY and still living there a very long time before moving to our side of the nation. We had various kinds of West Coast artists that the Independent and Mainstream scenes promoted.
Those kept us alive even before his career took off, and after he passed.

1. Cube, Xzibit, and Snoop were going strong until the middle of the 00's, Game revitalized L.A., Black Eyed Peas had the Alternative Rap wave on lock until they sold out and exclusively did EDM/Pop/Party Rap bullshyt.

2. Del was leading the Bay Area in the Independent scene alive, as well as E-40's and Too Short's careers coming back.

3. In this decade Black Hippy, YG, etc. are running things on both levels (Despite Jay Rock being the least successful and critically acclaimed). Granted, NONE of them are Pac, we evolved from multiple angles after his death - certainly aren't dead at all either, regardless of Kendrick using him as template for TPAB.

There hasn't been a decade where we "fell off" yet in terms of artistic direction, popularity and relevance to Hip-Hop.
When you think about it, the West deviated the least from our Hip-Hop roots compared to the other 3 regions. Our identity is still intact, yet we stay innovating new sounds in production that continue to fit our lane.

I hear you.
The West definitely imploded after Pac died, but there was a bit of a renaissance with 2001. And west coast artists were steadily dropping music, some of it good, but the cultural dominance was gone and never came back.
Who do you think the best west coast rapper in 97 was? Judging artists who dropped a project that year and judging on the strength of that project and any extracurriculars in the year?

Given that wasn't our strongest year, I'd have go with Coolio or Mack-10 for Gangsta Rap, or Del with Conscious/Alternative Rap.

Coolio went Platinum with "My Soul, Del and 10 went Gold, with "Future Development" and "Based On A True Story", respectively.

All those projects made unexpected noise too, given they weren't backed by official major label promotion - it's a rare feat for us.
Then we came back stronger in the 00's, and totally changed our associated sounds, if not modernized them entirely.

Those are some of my personal favorite albums from them too, damn shame the Coli doesn't talk about any of the 3 rappers.
:banderas::whew::blessed::wow: for 3 of those albums. Then Xzibit would come down, to step up WC Gangsta Rap when Snoop no longer couldn't - ah, my childhood first being exposed to this song.

i mean when you're picking literally one song per year, its very easy to misrepresent a year. every year either had doper shyt or shyt that wasn't as bad

seems like there was good and bad music around since the beginning

Del did not go gold Breh. That album was only available on the Hiero website. It was shelved by Electra. It didn't see a CD release until years later.

Coolio and Mack 10 were on major labels.
Coolio's album came and went. Mack's album made a little noise. It was an afterthought when evaluating the year as a whole though.

That's why I say the west was "dead" at that point.
