There are many role players like Beasley who do the same thing but they just cover their tracks better. Make millions and live pay cheque to cheque just confirms that Beasley and the rest of these players have no financial literacy.

The article kinda buried a very interesting lede...

The lawsuit was filed in a federal court in New York more than three years after a company that specializes in loaning money to professional athletes won a nearly $5.8 million judgment against Beasley in Maryland, court records show. The company, South River Capital, LLC, has loaned more than $250 million to athletes in recent years. A copy of the judgment was filed in Minnesota in 2022 when Beasley was playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves. It is unclear why Beasley borrowed money from South River Capital.

“It is very common for professional athletes to go to third-party lenders and get advances on contracts. It’s a part of the business of professional sports,” Haney told The News. “Many of these lenders are predatory and charge extremely high interest rates and outrageous fees that border on usury.”

A lot of folks we think are rich are actually broke living check to check. When you sign a 40mil deal you don't get 40mil up front. You're getting signing bonuses and game checks. And if you're dedicated to that baller lifestyle it's real easy to get behind. Rent you can't afford long term, cars you can't afford long term, hoes you can't afford long term. Few months of this and you see the disaster coming so what do you do. Cut spending? Live frugally? Nah. A lot of guys get a loan. Often from these Armenians who are mobbed up. Six figure loans with crazy interest rates. So now you're outta the hole but do you pay your rent and stop spending on dumb shyt? Nah you keep going. So you're paying rent monthly instead of just paying months in advance. Car costs still piling up. Hoes piling up. And maybe someone is pregnant. Oh and now you're paying family too.

Years of this behavior and you end up waaay in the hole.

$10s of millions is not a lot if you’re financially irresponsible. Nobody probably sat him down and taught him how to manage money. Financial irresponsibly scales up and you can’t really out earn it. At some point you either live within your means or go broke.

The Draft class of 2023 recently brought many questions to the Rookie Transition Program, a mandatory seminar for rookies.
LAS VEGAS — Dozens of future NBA players left their college campuses behind months ago and came to Summer League to hoop, only to find themselves back in a classroom this week, still taking notes.
It’s all part of the process at the NBA’s Rookie Transition Program, a four-day orientation where expert knowledge is dropped on rookies who are vaguely aware of the surreal world they’re about to enter.
It’s designed to help them understand everything that orbits around the game — money, relationships both business and personal, outside influences and other issues — and avoid the hiccups and speed-bumps that could interrupt careers, or end them prematurely.
In that sense, it’s the “summer league”‘ within the Summer League because much like the games being played in Vegas, everything about the program is geared toward preparation for next season and beyond. That’s why Ray Allen spoke to the rookies Monday about topics other than 3-point shooting. Jabari Smith Jr., fresh off his rookie season with the Rockets, detailed to them what his last 12 months were like. That’s two of several guest speakers who provided viewpoints from opposite ends of the NBA spectrum.

Beyond this, these guys have enough access to current and former players, coaches, front office execs. Lots of people who can help them understand their finances, investments and be sensible about their decisions. NBA does more than enough.

I dont agree. If you making millions, you should have more then enough to live. All that stuff that you are buying isnt necessary. So you gotta pay to keep that lifestyle.

If I am lending someone $50, no the interest should be crazy high, thats predatory. If I am lending you $100,000- yeah, that rate should be high as shyt. Thats big money. The stakes are higher. Im not a predator. YOU came to ME looking for money that I have and YOU dont.

Hate to say it, but he may not make it to 2026. He also going through a divorce.

He was married? Thought he was with Pippin's old thing for a minute.

In a way I agree, because usually the best and brightest are the ones who can even qualify for a six and seven figure loan.

BUT due to entertainment and athletics alot of dumb people have come into money and these high interest loans are just a legal way of finessing them. I wish Malik Beasley the best, he's a talented player I hope his life isn't ruined.
