I actually think the prob was WCW changed him up too much... the smoke "magic" effects, the long ass promo they had him cut. People woulda popped for the old Warrior who just ran out, clean house and left.

That Havoc show with the Hogan re-match was a sellout and popped one of their bigger buyrates of the year so I wouldn't call it a failure, but I don't think his WCW run had legs to last much longer than that even if he didn't get hurt.

That was WCW's attempt at character evolution, for what its worth. The Ultimate Warrior as a character never had a whole lot of depth and when you have to carry a several month long feud with 3+ hours of weekly television, you need more than snorts and squash matches. That would have wore thin in one month. Given the fact Warrior never had in ring skills to fall back on, they had to use fukkery to develop the angle.

I don't buy that.. Sting went a year without wrestling or speaking. Warrior didn't need to be a weekly promo, he could have made an impact other ways. Less is more w/ him

I can :heh: Because in a thread about simple answers, he went and instead reached for a complicated and incredibly subjective one. The simple answer is this:

He absolutely would have won world titles if he didn’t suffer what SHOULD have been a career ending back injury ‘’91. From then on, every time he was in the ring, he was on borrowed time. It’s very, very hard to imagine Bret still wins the title when he did if Perfect is around and healthy. How on earth could Curt’s persona and character come into play when the belt went to Bret in his absence, who is like Curt’s less charismatic palette swap who went years without proving himself capable of a dynamic performance.

Critique a detailed answer with a disdain for detail and then proceed to give a detailed answer brehs

The stupid levels :wow:

Nobody remembers it because they tried to recreate a moment, which is harder than rebooting a character. They are MOMENTS for a reason.

Tbh it really wasn't about recreating the moment, it was just about Hogan getting his win back and Warrior getting paid.

Sting already had the silent protagonist gimmick going. You can't do the same thing with Warrior as the same time.

Goldberg already had the unstoppable squash monster gimmick going. You couldn't have Warrior doing the same thing, just slower and older.

Piper already had the old legend with established history coming back to settle old debts gimmick going. Do we really want to rehash this one again?

I'm not saying what they chose for Warrior was the best option, but it was something they hadn't yet tried for an angle they really explored all options for

Bro this was late 98, Sting was in the Wolfpac at this point. He had already been out of the rafters for a minute and was cutting promos and shyt.

You didn't need to do anything special for Warrior other than let him be the hero who comes out at the end and wrecks the NWO. That's all ppl would want to see from him. That 20 minute promo they had him cut the night he debuted killed it

I agree with you on the props. They pretty much made him into a parody of himself a little. It seemed like he was playing himself in a crappy wrestling movie with the stupid magic tricks.

The fact that he was only brought in to lose to Hogan in a match that was probably one of the worse matches in history didn't help ether.

The Mr. Perfect podcast on Bruce Prichard's show explained it. His brief run against Hogan didn't draw and Coke Boy didn't like putting the belt on heels at that time anyway.

In WCW, he was just another guy lost in the shuffle and more than a few steps behind his former self in the WWF after back injuries. Too many bigger names in that company before you could even think of putting the belt on Hennig.

Honestly, Perfect became an undeniable main event level talent when they paired him with Heenan. I think the only reason he didnt win the belt is because the gulf war happened and they put Slaughter in the heel role to capitalize. Otherwise he would probably have been the guy to dethrone the Warrior.
