ATLANTA — The MARTA Board of Directors approved a resolution to change the name for one of its busiest stations.

The GWCC/CNN Center station in downtown Atlanta will soon become the Sports Entertainment and Convention, or SEC, rail station.

The signs and maps will be updated by Jan. 1, 2026, six months before Atlanta hosts games for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

the station officially opened on December 22, 1979. It was originally called Omni station due to its proximity to the Omni Coliseum, which was demolished to build Philips Arena (now State Farm Arena).

The station's name expanded in 1992 as Omni/Dome/World Congress Center (or simply Omni/Dome/GWCC)with that year's opening of the Georgia Dome as well as the Georgia World Congress Center (opened 1976). By the year 2000, the station name had changed to Dome/GWCC/Philips Arena/CNN Center. In June 2019, MARTA held a town hall to gather community input on a new name for the station after the demolition of the Georgia Dome and the renaming of Philips Arena to State Farm Arena. The station was one of five MARTA rail stations that were under consideration for new names in 2019. The name of the station was changed to GWCC/CNN Center

Atlanta continues to experience significant development and growth. In the past four years, Atlanta has added more than 11,130 apartments downtown.

Atlanta is fourth among the nation’s largest when it comes to apartment construction in the past four years.

Since 2020, Atlanta has added 11,130 new apartments downtown, about a third of the city’s new units.

The research is based on apartment data given to Rent Cafe’s sister company, commercial real estate researcher Yardi Matrix, as of January for buildings containing at least 50 units.

Rent Cafe says as of March, the average rent for an apartment in Atlanta is $1,758, and the average apartment size 970 square feet.
