Since we’re using whataboutisms, Traes defense isn’t actually trash. Capella & John Collins not being 100% most of the year & missing a lot of games is the real reason why Trae is bad on defense.

Advanced stats be fukked up sometimes. The only change in the starting lineup is Tyus Jones. And that nikka has a 111.7 rating while Ja has a 111.1. So it makes absolutely no sense for the Grizzlies to be that drastically better when the guy sitting in for Ja has a even worse rating. That might just have to do with the fact that the Grizzlies switch up their style of play when Ja is out.

Just from an objective standpoint, on bball index's rankings going back to 2010, Trae has the 2nd-worst and 7th-worst defensive seasons in the entire database. The only guy who is even close to having two seasons that bad is Jamal Crawford and he got his two awful seasons when he was 38yo and 39yo. (Not that Jamal hasn't always been a trash defender, it's just that he didn't become Trae-level trash until he was almost 40.) So calling him the worst defender of the current era had some objective validity.

Trae's ranking improved the last two years, in that he was "only" the 5th-worst and 7th-worst ranked defender in the NBA the last two seasons, rather than being #1 like he had been the previous year. But he's still the worst-ranked defender out of all players who put in at least 1,500 minutes and continues to be the worst-ranked defender on the Hawks. And no other player in the league has been so consistently bad on defense every season to the degree that Trae has.

The eye test says that they definitely work better a team without ja. They could work on fixing that in the off-season by getting ja to by in. It’s a weird situation where is the best on the team but not best for getting the most of them. They need to find a middle ground because the teams falls asleep when ja is playing compared to this
