There’s a Roots remake on there I think.
It’s on Hulu. Everyone hated the history channel remake of roots but it was way more historically accurate and better acted. Obviously, I would have preferred a series about a young boy coming of age in his tribe. The first episode in Africa is the only part worth rewatching.

Coming to America made over 300 million at the box office. That was all us? It was mainly because of Eddie’s 80s popularity but still....

Perhaps the better question would be, what non-fantasy black film becomes that popular?

For instance, The Best Man isn’t up there like My Best Friend’s Wedding.

fukk Viola Davis and all her c00n roles playing the white women servant or the white mans whore bytch. And that other chick too. I only see her at n Mammy roles.
An older, darkskinned Black woman takes what she can in Hollywood. It’s really a shyt hand. Even Angela Basset is reduced to shows like American Horror Story and 911. Black writers need to be more invested in writing worthwhile stories for 40+ year old Black women.

Viola Davis Regrets Making The Help: “It Wasn’t the Voices of the Maids That Were Heard”

:comeon:

From a 2012 interview on the Tavis Smiley Show

Oscar-nominated actresses Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer had a passionate discussion with Tavis Smiley on Thursday.

The interview was more of a heated debate but it offered insight in to the minds of both actresses and how they feel about the criticism ‘The Help’ has received.

It’s a must see interview.

“That very mindset that you have and that a lot of African-Americans have is absolutely destroying the black artist. The black artist cannot live in a place–in a revisionist place–a black artist can only tell the truth about humanity and humanity is messy, people are messy,” Davis told Smiley.

“We as African-American artists are more concerned with image and message and not execution, which is why every time you see your images they’ve been watered down to the point where they where they are not realistic at all, it’s like all of our humanity has been washed out,” Davis went on to say.
