It is true that more than half of Americans don't have passports, and a lot of married women don't have updated birth certificates to reflect their legal name changes. It's not "normal" or "reasonable" to expect people to jump through these hoops.

This will disproportionately target marginalized communities, especially Black voters, and low-income individuals. This is nothing but voter suppression dressed up as "election integrity," and claiming it's not that bad is just an attempt to downplay the reality of it all. The Senator is right to compare this to Jim Crow too, because it's a clear reflection of what this bill is really about. It is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, because non-citizen voting in federal elections is a myth, and these restrictions are just another way to suppress votes.
