Just ran across this video lol. People are so conditioned to the heroes death/sacrifice trope. Not saying it’s a bad trope but not ever story has to do it. Joel’s death made sense in the world and story that Naughty Dog built.

Theres nothing else to finish if they don’t make another game. Season 3 will be the last

It’s not like game of thrones where they’re committed to 5 seasons of material that doesn’t exist. The last of us part 2 has a perfectly fine ending.

It's a hit show though. As an example Shogun from last year won a ton of awards and despite there being no source material left there'll be a season 2. Not necessarily what will happen here but there's precedent. It's good they're stretching Part 2 into a 3rd season though.

There’s also plenty of hit mini series, specifically from HBO lately like Watchmen or Chernobyl that don’t continue that long when they could have.

if they really wanted to milk it they could have easily made season 1 two seasons and season 2 3 seasons. That gets you to breaking bad/the wire territory

One year ago Druckmann was saying in the documentary about TLOU2 that there was a concept for part 3 and that there's "probably one more chapter to this story".

If he's backtracking from that is because Naughty Dog is all in on their new IP and a third TLOU game is not in any immediate plan and he might never get to it.

But with that quote from last year it became pretty clear that he and Naughty Dog have an "in case of emergency" button for a 3rd game if/when needed
