The game was never going to properly translate to television, yet it didn't stop people from initially propping it up that it would be. Part 2 was always going to be a gamble to the casual viewer especially after killing off/replacing your lead, which has doomed other shows before it.

911 is about to learn that same lesson as well.

I don’t think it’s exactly the same. Pedro is a bonafide star. The only star the show had. Cutting him loose after two episodes is gonna hit different than in a game with immediate access to the entire story, and where the gameplay can offset prestige.

This season also wasn’t very good imo. Eps 2 and 6 were great. The rest…. ehhh. I think the showrunners were clearly afraid of the blowback from the game. They made so many changes to soften the loudest critiques (like revealing Abby’s motives at the start, completely removing Abby’s physical stature, and Ellie accidentally killing Mel) they heard from the game, when they should have stuck to their guns.

Also, it didn’t bother anyone else that for all the ground they cover in Seattle, nothing is really happening? They basically surrounded three set pieces (the subway, Nora, and the aquarium) with exposition and time stamps. The Wolves have enough men to invade an island, but they never really encounter them at all? They have dogs, but Ellie — who basically was bumbling all through Seattle — can just sneak through a hole in the floor and poof, Nora found?

I thought they were gonna have TOO much story for 7 episodes, but it turned out they didn’t have nearly enough because they prioritized giving Abby her own season. And unlike season 1, I would argue that most of their attempts to add new storylines didn’t work this time.

the second season felt like it was speed running from point to point by the end -

i like a lot of it but it didn't stick the landing for me and for a show that going to disappear for 14 months i really need a sharp ending that left you thinking

i think they were scared to make Bella Ramsey the villain .. she doesn't kill any wolfs or scars not tied to joel death .. never kills an animal and is constantly being saved by Dina and jessie

Ellie the most dangerous person to ever be a protagonist .. her capacity for mayhem and she feels cool and powerful as a serial killer combat person in a game. while the hbo adapation has scaled back the violence a lot to the game their need to be a point where ellie snapped they should kill dina or have her save a scar child and have that kid die so she snaps and becomes more violent.

Bella Ramsey just doesn’t have the range. You’re competing with a fully idealized version of Ashley Johnson (who is a much better actress) from the game that is just all around more athletic looking because they got to design her that way

i dunno i rather bella try and fail - then craig and neil treat her like she 14 old child and not an adult performer. i am fine with using stealth and Suprise to kill people - they could played with bella looking young and innocent and stabing or shooting people when they let their guard down :manny:

Ashley johnson is a good actor and naturally has a mean streak - she told this story on a podcast that her and her father pretend to be dead to fukk with her bother for sneaking out late and that like such an extreme action and she even did that gleeful evil ellie laugh

so it probably was easier for her:yeshrug:

The thing everyone was concerned about was the progression of time between season 1 and 2 and they just didn’t nail it at all. Bella didn’t have the personality and maturity shift she needed, even aside from the violence.

and Craig Mazin acts like he’s terrified of the sight of blood
