Personality can help. I see ugly broke nikkas with moderately attractive/pretty women all the time. Also aside from money most women want a guy who is kinda rough looking (not prettier than her)...my aunt who I've posted only dates ugly guys. She don't like pretty or handsome men really. Never been with one.

I personally like pretty men. It doesn't threaten me like it does some women.
