Police have arrested five men on numerous charges in one of the parish’s largest ever drug busts after officers with the New Roads Police Department and the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office were notified of an armed robbery Monday night around 8 p.m.
So far, the investigation has netted 16 pounds of marijuana, one of the largest seizures of its kind in Pointe Coupee, and about $9,000 cash, police said.
A woman reported having her wallet and cellphone stolen while she was in the parking lot of a store just outside New Roads city limits, police said, to start the investigation in motion. Soon, it was found by police to have been “a drug deal gone bad.”
Within minutes of receiving a “be on the lookout,” or BOLO, from the parish Communication Center, Lt. Walter Warr III spotted a vehicle matching the description of the one allegedly involved in the crime, an older white Chevrolet Monte Carlo with three men in it.
“That’s how it all got started,” said Capt. Brett Robillard of the Sheriff’s Office, who said the cooperative investigation has led so far to five arrests and will likely lead to the arrests of others.
In all, five people have been arrested—the three men in the Monte Carlo and two others at a house in Morganza—on charges ranging from possession of a firearm to possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, Robillard and New Roads Police Chief Kevin McDonald said. — © Copyright The Pointe Coupee Banner
