Oakland is a real toxic place.

A's can't get out of there soon enough

They don’t show up to games either
After the trade deadline the 2022 team had a payroll of $22 million and had 0 players under contract for 2023. Eric Chavez is still the biggest contract they’ve ever given out at $66 million before the current owner bought them. The 2023 team went into opening day with the same payroll they had in 1991. This year they’re the only team in the majors with a payroll lower than what they had in 2007. It’s also worth noting that their owner was allowed to submit a non competitive bid to buy them. Reality is that the fans are right to not show up for a team run by maybe the worst owner in North American pro sports. An owner who never should’ve been allowed to buy the team and who should’ve at least been forced to sell ages ago. It’s also largely his fault the raiders left.

And despite all this, the A's have made the postseason 11 times since 2000. Fan attendance has never been higher than 7th in the AL, despite Oakland Coliseum having a capacity of over 56k for baseball.

A's have had success on the field, but a lack of fan support and playing in the worst facility in sports in one of the worst cities in America and this is why we are here.

Don’t get me wrong the fans are right to not show up now, it’s pointless. But Oakland fans never showed up to the games throughout the bad or even good times. The A’s could’ve went 162-0 and fans still wouldn’t have been there

11 times and would probably be close to 20 if not for the owners they’ve had, which is my point. The front office has to find a way to compete in spite of the owners never caring because every time they get good players, the team trades them away or lets them walk once their initial contract ends. How many times have they gutted the roster since 2001? At least 3-4 times and every time the owner makes a point to show he doesn’t care about winning or even putting a watchable team on the field. You can’t expect the fans to keep showing up to watch a team when they know nobody on the roster will spend more than 3-4 years total on the team because the owner isn’t willing to spend to keep any good players in town.

What them prices was looking like? They made a point of playing small with that movie they made and that goes against the entertainment part of baseball that the whole of baseball is trying to improve now. If those ticket prices ain't matching the level of excitement the style of play brings.......:francis:

Breh, it’s economics. A’s play in the worst stadium in baseball topped on by historically tepid fan support. The fact they’ve made the playoffs 11 times in 25 years with literally no resources is a miracle in itself.

Franchise isn’t perfect, but they’ve put a good product on the field more often than not. The fact that people expect the fukking A’s to spend like the Giants, Mariners, Angels etc are deluded

They haven’t made effort to spend in probably at least 30 years now and the owner hasn’t once made any real effort to negotiate to get a new park built. Look at their payroll rankings on a year by year basis and tell me that team cares about anything but stuffing revenue sharing checks in the owners pockets.

I used to diss A’s fans but at the end of the day you can’t keep getting rid of your best players once they get too expensive and expect people to care. plus at least their fans showed up for their last playoff game 50k in 2019? Unlike the Rays who couldn’t even sellout last season.. Those playoff games at coliseum were always lit.

What they’ve (mostly 90% Billy Beane) did in the past should be commended absolutely, but currently they are one of the worst franchises in sports. Top 5 worst farm system, literally gave away Chapman, Murphy and Olson for nothing. I always liked the Giants and A’s equally but getting rid of their last core rubbed me the wrong way pause.

I blame the city of Oakland a lot but at the end of the day the owner had twenty years to get something done especially in Fremont and/or at Laney College and couldn’t get it done. No reason to cape for a billionaire.

Terrible.

A's fans and Oakland deserved better than the cheap ownership they've had for the last few decades. Maybe they've always had cheap ownership.

You look at those Reggie Jackson and Catfish Hunter teams in the 1970s...the Rickey Henderson and Mark McGwire teams in the late 80s/early 90s...those were special teams and they had passionate fans.
Shoot, even the early aughts/Moneyball era A's. They could never get over the hump (i.e. NYY) but they were fun to watch. Giambi, Miggy, Hud, Zito, Mulder, Dye...they were legit. I remember that 20-game win streak in '02 IINM, or whenever Miggy's MVP year was.
