University of Michigan Professor Arrested in Sex Sting After Allegedly Traveling to Florida to Meet with 14-Year-Old Boy
BY TARA FOWLER
POSTED ON AUGUST 12, 2015 AT 11:25AM EST
BROWARD SHERIFF'S OFFICE
A University of Michigan professor is under arrest for allegedly trying to have sex with a teenage boy.
James Cavalcoli, 51, was taken into custody on Monday after he traveled to Weston, Florida, for what he thought was a rendezvous with a 14-year-old, police said. He allegedly believed he had arranged the encounter with the boy’s father.
The arrest came after an undercover officer allegedly posed as the boy’s father online, according to WPTV.
Police said they are now reviewing several devices confiscated from Cavalcoli, including a laptop that is “undergoing forensic examination.”
Cops said the officer who posed as the boy’s dad said that he started chatting with “Jim” on a site that’s geared toward men with sexual fetishes for young boys, according to The Sun Sentinel.
They allegedly conversed on and off for nearly two years before Jim posted last month that he was traveling to Florida in August, writing: “Any sons or Dads in that area want to meet up for fun?”
Cops said the officer responded and said Jim could have sex with his son, provided it caused no pain to the boy, The Sun Sentinelreports.
Jim allegedly wrote back saying he’d bring condoms and lube, adding: “I’m glad you’re looking out for your boy!”
They arranged to meet, but Cavalcoli ended up being greeted by police instead, who arrested him on the spot, police said. The professor allegedly has since confessed, officials said, saying that he “knew he should not have traveled and regretted his decision.”
Cavalcoli is an assistant professor of computational medicine and bioinformatics. A spokesperson for the University of Michigan told WPTV that the school is “currently reviewing the matter and will cooperate fully with law enforcement investigators.”
