Glory to Michigan
Rashan Gary's obsession with being a defensive end is what will lead to his downfall as a great pro prospect.
The guy has Warren Sapp potential as a 3-technique. Why he hasn't gotten up to 300 lbs and played DT yet makes no sense to me.
4.7 speed for a DE is good. But for a DT it's all time great.
The kid can be a solid DE or all-time great DT. I don't know why he doesn't want to be all-time great.
For arguments sake let's say you're correct in saying Gary's most optimal position is DT.
Michigan has two really good interior linemen who are better than Carlo Kemp, Gary's primary backup, and Gary is capable of playing DE at a high level. What decision would you make as Greg Mattison/Don Brown?
Keep in mind 6'5" 300lb Chris Wormley, who Gary is replacing, was one of Michigan's best and most consistent players all last season. I won't currently say Gary is better than him, but he has the potential to eclipse Wormley in every category.
If your assessment is correct, then pro coaches will experiment with him there anyway. Didn't we see Mario Williams and Jadeveon Clowney play a wide array of positions early on?
