I didn't follow Cal too close, besides when you beat Auburn a few years ago, but apparently starting strong and fading fast was a Wilcox coached team staple.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory has been a Cal staple since before Wilcox. The admin are experts in choosing coaches who follow that pattern OR they stopped the coach from recruiting players they didn't think were Cal material. They straight up told Wilcox to recruit players that would graduate from Cal rather than leave early for the NFL.
