Thats the thing, the schools don’t have leverage if they want a “proven commodity”. LSU can EASILY pull some FCS hot shot or a coordinator from some other large program but they don’t want that. They don’t want to hire Cignetti from James Madison, they want the Cignetti from Indiana.
So if you are going to pull a coach from a comfortable situation you have to make “an offer they can’t refuse”. LSU didn’t hire Brian Kelly from Central Michigan, they hired him from ND, so they had to pay.
And they aren’t just bidding against themselves, they are bidding against the field. The field has disposable income they can use for coaches as well.
