I think the plan is to see if he can handle splitting time at 1B/DH/and limited C. But, others have also said he likely didn't like the contract offer that was presented to him, so they pivoted to lock up Basallo. Adley still has two more years of arbitration but they will likely trade him the way things are going.
The real question will be is Rubenstein going to spend the money on Boras Trio, which the O's objectively need to lock in at least one of them but definitely 2 of them.
If the Nationals play the rest of the league like they play Phillies and Mets they would be a playoff team
