They all understood the art and science of pitching too. Helped that they were teammates but still.

I'll never understand why it's so difficult to just change speeds, change location, hit your spots, pitch to contact and trust your defense. Velocity and spin rate aren't everything.
I feel like something happened where it was all about velocity. Like there was a kid I played against in travel ball/legion ball/high school. First legit 90+ fastball I ever saw. He threw gas non-stop. Got him a D1 scholarship and he immediately got converted to his other position Catcher. I can't recall if he got hurt right out of the gate in college or not. But, he ultimately went mostly catcher and did some relief work. Dropped down to D2 and had a great college run. But, he basically blew his arm out while we were young before he even got into college.

I understand that sports are always gonna be different as we get older and the styles are gonna change but I don't like the main aspects of today's game. Too much feast or famine.

I'll always be a fan of small ball. Speed kills in baseball. Always has. Always will. That's why Rickey Henderson was so good. Look at the pressure he put on the defense when he gets on. Ronald Acuña Jr. is the closest we'll see to that.

Pitching definitely all about velocity now

The average mlb fb velocity has went up 4 mph over the last 20 years

That’s why Kyle Hendricks was called a Maddux wannabe cuz he didn’t throw hard and had a nasty changeup

He fell off as he got older but he had a very solid career. I was a Kyle Hendricks fan. Throwback pitcher. Hit his spots, pitched to contact, and trusted his defense.

I wasn’t the biggest Hendricks fan cuz he definitely wasn’t maddux ,but he did start game 6 of the nlcs & game 7 of the World Series and killed it

To be fair, there hasn't been another Maddux since Maddux. You're probably not gonna see anything like him again either.
:hubie:

I don't think so. Maddux the individual player, might not be replicated, but if teams prioritize the type of pitcher he was, you will start seeing that type emerge.

If next year, a maddux clone gets a 40 a year contract, every pitcher in high school and college will watch all the tape they can find and they will actively work on emulating the type of pitcher he was. Velocity gets the highest contracts so everybody is going to blow their arms out trying to average 100 to get that mega contract

Dillon Dingler is a hilarious fukkin name. But he's seemingly been on a heater went yard today. Might be a sneaky pick up if you need help at Catcher.
