They all understood the art and science of pitching too. Helped that they were teammates but still.

I'll never understand why it's so difficult to just change speeds, change location, hit your spots, pitch to contact and trust your defense. Velocity and spin rate aren't everything.

I feel like something happened where it was all about velocity. Like there was a kid I played against in travel ball/legion ball/high school. First legit 90+ fastball I ever saw. He threw gas non-stop. Got him a D1 scholarship and he immediately got converted to his other position Catcher. I can't recall if he got hurt right out of the gate in college or not. But, he ultimately went mostly catcher and did some relief work. Dropped down to D2 and had a great college run. But, he basically blew his arm out while we were young before he even got into college.

I saw a video from I believe Trevor May on why pitchers chase velocity above all else and its for every MPH harder you throw, your expected ERA goes down by almost half a run. Its just harder to hit velocity and since pitchers are basically paid off analytics and not necessarily innings, its who has the best stuff and who can strike people out. Wins and losses dont really matter anymore and its just those underlying stats that pitchers are chasing and getting paid off of.
