Even if WAR wasn't a stat in 2003, we've always known that relievers were basically never worthy of the Cy Young.

But just to put it out there, Eric Gagne's WAR in 2003 was 3.7.
Mark Prior's WAR was 7.4.

Gagne had a ridiculous 337 ERA+ and he struck out 137 batters in 82 innings.
That's an elite season for a closer.

But he didn't deserve that award. And he lacked the greatness sustained over time to be in the conversation with Mariano.

What i’m saying is

i’m taking 2002-2004 Eric Gagne as a closer over ANY other closer to finish a game from any era

Mariano is the goat

but i’d take that era of Gagne before anyone else… he was literally automatic…

and him & mo the only closers with MULTIPLE 50+ save seasons…

Eckersley had a 0.61 era and 48 saves and didn’t win a cy

That won the Cy and MVP in a lesser year

This is due to these bozo ass voters but Mariano Rivera is the only player in the Hall of Fame to be voted in unanimously.

Miss me with that Eric Gagne as the GOAT closer nonsense.

I see your point here. I'd still be hard pressed to pick him over Mariano. Even using Gagne at his apex

i get it yall see mo as the quintessential closer… when you think of the 9th inning you think of Mo

but at there peak… mo isnt seeing Gagne
theyre closers… CLOSERS! they have 1 job
and that is to CLOSE THE GAME…
GAME OVER… that was a thing

While mariano did a great job at it
Gagne was literally PERFECT for damn near 2 year…

Out of it he got a cy young award for that…
And really… the only legit RELIEVER to deserve/receive that award (baseball before 95 doesnt exist:yeshrug:)

that’s something we’ll NEVER see again

Glad he went in a different direction. We still hear about PCA, but he was never the 3rd highest rated prospect in the majors. That was a little too expensive IMO.

If Oneil Cruz goes 0/4 tonight it will be the 6th time in his last 7 games.
