Even after watching 10 years worth of movies, It's still unreal to me that they managed to get people to care about The Avengers - mainly anchored around second tier characters - to the point that it stands a legit chance of ending up as the highest grossing movie of all time.

I remember picking up comics on the way to school two decades ago and being that they'd sold out of X-Men at the newsagents I would cop from, and so I grudgingly picked up this issue

It's still at my folks place - unread to this day.

TBH I loved the xmen but the avengers in modern times the writers stepped their game up... Especially during the civil war arc shyt was serious...
I always knew the avengers especially Iron Man could be a top tier... I mean a man in a super powered suit of armor being a super hero writes itself... Also the captain america thing I liked the arc with the terrorist after the 9/11 comic in the book where he's chasing after a fictional terrorist and the terrorist is linked to the same govt. I think anything in the early 2000's is when they started to get really hot before the movies...

But the xmen will always be number 1 in my heart... They don't get enough credit..

I didn't really bang with The Avengers like that till 'The Ultimates' - its influence on these movies doesn't get brought up enough, but they put the idea of Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury out there years before it happened. The team was constantly involved in straight fukkery of their own making too. I understand them scaling back, because some of it was way too for family movies.

Widow's arc in general was

That whole 'Is Thor actually a god, or a diesel mental patient who stole some super high end tech?' storyline(they played with that a little in Thor 1 though)

The plan to get rid of Hulk once and for all

It fell off a cliff after Volume 2 though. 3 was terrible.
