Blackwell Wakes From Coma After Having Part Of Skull Removed
By Elliot Foster
Nick Blackwell has regained consciousness after doctors told his family he might never wake up after an ill-advised sparring session.
The former British middleweight champion, who was put into an induced coma in March after collapsing following a defeat at the hands of Chris Eubank Jr., was forced to give up boxing in the wake of that incident.
But Trowbridge man Blackwell didn’t heed the warning and stepped into the ring for a four-round sparring session in November. He was taken ill and forced back into hospital where he was put into another coma.

After the first incident, the 26-year-old made a full recovery and although he was forced out of the ring as a fighter, the British Boxing Board of Control gave him a trainer’s licence, enabling him to train fighters and work in the corner with his own former trainer Gary Lockett among others.
This time, though, the outlook was much more bleak. His family were told that he may not wake up and if he did there was a good chance he would be paralysed.
Doctors removed part of his skull to relieve the pressure from a brain bleed after the sparring session and it was revealed on Thursday night that he had defied the odds once more.
"A few days ago we had the Christmas miracle we've been wanting so badly to happen,” his friend Chantelle Spong wrote on Facebook.
"We walked into the hospital expecting to see Nick staring blankly at us but instead he was watching telly and really trying to get words out to talk to people now that his breathing ventilator has been taken out completely.
"He looks just like himself again and is very smiley.
"We knew he could hear us talking to him when he was asleep and this is the one thing we kept saying - 'just wake up before Christmas'.
"He's still got a very long way to go to recover to his full potential but we know he will do it."
Blackwell sparred with Hasan Karkardi on that fateful day and the fighter and his trainer, Liam Wilkins, have been suspended by the British Boxing Board of Control.
"We don't know what was going through Nick's mind at the time,” Spong continued, “but we do know boxing was Nick's life and full-time job for 10 years.
"It was all he ever knew and it got ripped away from him. If Nick thought for one second that he didn't feel 100 per cent, we know in our hearts he would of never stepped foot in that ring to spar.
"His family and friends are his world and we know he never wanted us to go through this again but he genuinely thought he was at full health."
The news of Blackwell waking up from his coma comes just hours after former foe Chris Eubank Jr. described his decision to step back in the ring as “madness.”
Further details regarding Blackwell’s recovery will be revealed in due course.

How he used that punch to neutralize Manny in their first fight
When talking about boxer’s signature punches, his mastery and effectiveness with that right to the body has to be mentioned. The motion was wonderful. So many times his opponent threw their hands up to block a right to the dome piece when he wound that one up.

CHRIS ALGIERI TO JOIN DANNY JACOBS CAMP AS NUTRITIONIST

Danny Jacobs is likely going to be guzzling a lot of avocados and smoothies as he preps for Gennady Golovkin on March 18 at Madison Square Garden.
RingTV.com has learned that Jacobs has added former titleholder Chris Algieri to his camp as a full-time nutritionist to help in making weight and also in the mental aspects of preparing to face Golovkin over a 10-week camp. Algieri has a Master’s degree in clinical nutrition and often posts videos of his favorite recipes to social media, which have in the past included avocados and smoothies.
Algieri, who will accompany Jacobs for the full duration of his training camp, will be tasked with cooking his meals and helping to make sure he is eating properly and on target to make weight for the middleweight fight for Golovkin’s WBA/WBC/IBF titles on HBO PPV. Algieri will not be in the corner on March 18. Algieri also plans to serve in a similar role in former two-division champion Paulie Malignaggi’s upcoming fight.
“We felt it was a good idea to bring Chris on board because of his knowledge of nutrition and because of his experience at the highest levels of the sport,” Keith Connolly, an advisor to Jacobs, told RingTV.com on Thursday. “We think Chris will be a valuable addition to the team. He knows what it’s like to prepare for big fights and will also be able to help with the psychological aspects, as well.”
Jacobs, who holds a secondary title, is regarded as a big middleweight and making weight for him is usually a struggle. Algieri is noted for his tip-top conditioning and his expertise on nutrition, though he did have trouble making weight in his bout with Manny Pacquiao in 2014, weighing under the catch-weight limit of 144 pounds on his second try. He said he miscalculated by eating a meal before the initial weigh-in and returned just an hour later to safely weigh-in.
But Algieri (21-3, 8 knockouts) is lauded for his training and eating habits and also his toughness in the ring. Algieri works as an Athletic Performance Nutrition Coach for Stony Brook University, where he graduated from with a Bachelor’s degree in health care science in 2007. Algieri listed on his bio that he is also a “Certified Sports Nutritionist by The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) and a Fitness Nutrition Coach through the National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association (NESTA).”
“I have dedicated my life to the study of the human body and what makes a person feel and perform better,” he wrote on his linkedin.com profile. “I have trained with and formulated diet & exercise programs for athletes from a number of disciplines including boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, MMA, swimming, football, hockey, track and basketball.”
Algieri won a 140-pound title in 2014, upsetting Ruslan Provodnikov after rising from a pair of first-round knockdowns. He recently took on Errol Spence Jr. in April and was surprisingly stopped in the fifth round, heralding Spence as one of the top talents in the sport. Algieri has not fought since. Now, he will have another challenge in preparing Jacobs for the biggest test of his career
This is really dope.
I think he can really be successful in this role, he just has a really tough first time assignment.
I can see JDJ hollaring at him for the Ward-KKK rematch
Been meaning to comment on that article all day. I think that is a great career move for Algieri. Dude knows how to fight and what it takes to make weight in camp, with his educational background, he could niche out a career for decades doing that. This is really dope.
