Teddy Atlas: Why I left Gennady Golovkin off my pound-for-pound list

Putting together an honest and responsible top 10 pound-for-pound fighters list is not so easy. Of course, such lists are subjective, but even so you must try to use cold and fact-oriented criteria for nomination.

And even using strict calculus, in the end you will call on experience and even instinct to make a final analysis.

P4P rankings: Santa Cruz, Garcia get votes after great performances[/paste:font]
Leo Santa Cruz and Mikey Garcia produced exciting victories this past weekend, but was that enough to push them into the ESPN pound-for-pound rankings? Not into the Top 10.

Trying to figure out who is the best can be as difficult and controversial as judging a fight.

It is amazing how three people can watch a fight, yet see three different outcomes when it comes to scoring. Again, aside from the various opinions, trying to grade the best fighters comes down to five elements or categories:

1. Talent: Pure ability
2. Technique: How does he apply his talent?
3. Time and consistency: How long has he performed at this level?
4. Competition: How good is it?
5. Slippage: There's always someone breathing over your shoulder

I believe, relatively speaking, Golovkin is as physically strong and tough as anyone on that list. But I also believe there are others with better technique. I also believe he may be slipping. I understand he might have been sick when he looked very ordinary at times against Kell Brook. But sick or not, his technical flaws were evident. Also, his level of competition has been questionable or at least very advantageous for him.

My next statement will probably evoke more outrage against me and my judgments. I would pick Golovkin to beat Canelo Alvarez head-to-head right now.

But that is different -- GGG may be too big and too strong for Canelo, who is ranked eighth on my list. That doesn't mean that I have to include GGG on a short list that shows who has better abilities collectively and has displayed them against the better opposition.

Also, I feel Canelo has shown improvements lately while Golovkin has not. For those detractors who will ask about Errol Spence Jr.'s opponents, I would honestly answer that they may be right. But that is where I must use my experience and even instinct to tell me that Spence will perform at a higher level, as his abilities, technique and mental state project he will.

As I said earlier, if I could add honorable mentions, I would ask for two spots and include Golovkin and Mikey Garcia. But this is about the here and now. Although I fully understand the criticism of my top 10 list, I also know that being on a pound-for-pound list is subject to many variables, and hopefully I have been able to explain some of them.

Atlas: Why I left GGG off my pound-for-pound list
I disagree. GGG has beaten more top 10 contenders than most even though the division is shallow and he dominated them. I can't Errol Spence ahead of him yet

Beterbiev-Barrera: Michel Wins IBF Purse Bid To Promote Fight

Artur Beterbiev’s promoter won a purse bid Thursday for the right to promote the IBF light heavyweight elimination match between contenders Beterbiev and Sullivan Barrera.

The purse bid took place Thursday afternoon at the IBF’s headquarters in Springfield, New Jersey. Quebec’s Yvon Michel, Beterbiev’s promoter, won with a bid of $251,000. Main Events, the New Jersey company that promotes Barrera, bid just over $181,000. Michel and Main Events were the only promoters to submit bids.

Michel has 15 days to submit an official contract for the fight, including the date and site, to Main Events. The Beterbiev-Barrera fight must be scheduled for within 90 days of Thursday. There would be a 75-25 split in favor of Beterbiev for this bout. That means Beterbiev would earn $188,250 if it were to happen. Barrera’s cut would be $62,750.

Michel would like to pair a bout between the Russian-born Beterbiev (11-0, 11 KOs) and the Cuban-born Barrera (18-1, 13 KOs) on a card that would feature another Michel-promoted light heavyweight, Adonis Stevenson, and Joe Smith. Michel has been negotiating with Joe DeGuardia, Smith’s promoter, to arrange a Stevenson-Smith match for Stevenson’s WBC light heavyweight title for April 29 at the newly renovated Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. Smith (23-1, 19 KOs), of Mastic, New York, is a popular fighter on Long Island and having him participate in a world title fight in the first boxing event at the new Nassau Coliseum would attract positive publicity for the venue.

Smith has other options, though, and his next fight might not come against Stevenson (28-1, 23 KOs). That could complicate the placement of a Beterbiev-Barrera bout, although Michel’s intention is to expose Beterbiev to American boxing fans by bringing his next fight to the United States. Beterbiev resides in Montreal.

Other than one fight in Chicago in June 2015, he has fought exclusively in Quebec since he turned pro in June 2013. Meanwhile, Kathy Duva, Main Events’ chief executive officer, told BoxingScene.com on Thursday that she will keep Barrera’s options open. “We just have to see what happens,” Duva said. “We just don’t have any information, as far as when and where it is. We have plans for Barrera, and we could reinstitute those. But he clearly wants this fight [against Beterbiev].”

Kalenga returns Feb 18 against WIlson
Former Interim cruiserweight world champion Youri “El Toro” Kalenga will provide chief support February 18 for pro-debuting Moroccan amateur Mohammad Rabii on the “Battle of Casablanca” card, presented by Nowhere2Hyde, at Complexe de Sportif Mohammed V Arena in Casablanca, Morocco. Kalenga (22-3, 15 KOs), fighting out of France by way of The Congo, is currently rated #12 by the World Boxing Association (WBA) and #16 by the World Boxing Council (WBC). He takes on Garrett “The Ultimate Warrior” Wilson (17-11-1, 9 KOs), of Philadelphia.

Also in action will be former WBA featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyeka (29-3, 17 KOs), who is world ranked #4 by the WBA and #7 by the WBC. He faces undefeated Hungarian prospect David Nerna (8-0, 8 KOs) in a 10-round bout.

Dutch light middleweight Gevorg Khatchikian (24-2, 12 KOs) will also be in action against Ugandan Med “Kabona” Sebyala (16-8-1. 13 KOs) in another 10-rounder. Khatchikian, formerly a super middleweight, will be fighting as a 154-pounder for the first time as a professional.

The 23-year-old Mohammad Rabii won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. He will take on veteran Hungarian boxer Adam “Bad Boy” Mate (24-10, 17 KOs) in the six-round main event.

Gary Hyde manages Rabii, Kalanga and Vetyeka.

Arum wants Crawford to fight away from home May 20, unlike Ward

Unified junior welterweight champion Terence Crawford has a May 20 date on hold at HBO, but it likely won’t take place in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska as officials try to expose him to different markets — contrary to what has happened in the career of Andre Ward, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told RingTV.com on Thursday.

Arum listed Texas and Los Angeles as possible destinations for Crawford’s next bout. But the veteran promoter would like to move away from Omaha so that the same people don’t always see him, and he referenced the whereabouts of Ward, who has fought mostly on the West Coast, including eight times in his hometown of Oakland, as an example of what they hope not to do with Crawford.

“That’s what has been reported but that’s the one place we weren’t considering,” Arum told RING of Crawford fighting in Omaha. “Now could we consider it? Yeah, but with Terence we want to make sure we have him fight in different places and not, like they did with Andre Ward, in one place, even though we do tremendous gates (in Omaha) and everything. And Terence’s last fight was in Omaha. So, I think the plan is, if we can, to put it someplace else.”

Crawford (30-0, 21 knockouts) will likely take on either WBC mandatory challenger Antonio Orozco (25-0, 16 KOs) or the highly regarded southpaw Felix Diaz (19-1, 9 KOs), Arum said. “We don’t have a site yet. We don’t have an opponent,” Arum acknowledged. “He has two titles and the WBC may be calling for a mandatory against this Orozco. That’s possible. This guy that (promoter Lou) DiBella has, Diaz, I understand is a real talent and is capable of giving Terence a good fight. So, it will probably be one or the other of those guys. But we have to talk to Terence’s people, so we’ll see.”

Crawford has a nice fan base in his hometown, where he fought in December and stopped overmatched John Molina Jr. in eight rounds. But Arum wants to deliver him to different locales, such as Chicago, as he tries to build him into a better known commodity to match his impressive skills in the ring. “There’s Texas, there’s Los Angeles, there are a lot of good boxing markets to expose him in,” Arum said. “Ultimately, I think we have an opportunity down the road to put a big fight in Chicago. Lot of interest in Chicago. Either (Vasyl) Lomachenko or Crawford could fight there because (Crawford is) a Midwesterner. And with Lomachenko because there’s a big Ukrainian population in Chicago. So we’re considering Chicago.”
