Bad enough Paulie was always a average fighter at his best, at this point he's shot

see, once again, you are missing the point. the HBO hype machine knows that the casual fan wont remember the Cano fight. this is a big fight. Remember when Zab still got $5 million to fight Floyd after he lost to Baldomir? Nobody wanted to see Floyd vs Baldomir, they wanted to see Floyd vs Zab. I can name dozens more fights like this. To fans like us, this fight is shyt....we know Paulie aint winning and we know just how bad he is now, but to the general viewer, its a young rising star in a major title fight in one of the world's most celebrated divisions. (Sorry, but Welterweight has always had more glory than Jr Welter.) Just because we know this fight is meaningless, that doesnt equate to the value it has for HBO now and going forward.

simple, because nobody knows who that is. Floyd couldve faced Berto at any time. Berto loses to Ortiz...Floyd fights Ortiz. Berto loses to Guererro, Floyd fights Guererro. Ortiz and Guerrero are easier fights for Floyd, not saying Berto could beat him but he matches up better due to style and speed/reflexes. then the bottom line is, Berto dont bring as much money as those guys in comparison for the ease of fight. same as why Broner wont fight Ajose. why? again. you are not looking at things the way the people cutting the checks are. Bradley couldve fought Alexander way earlier than he did, but the money wasnt there for the risk.

Bernard Hopkins is the master of this. He NEVER wanted to face Dawson and only did so because he was mandated. Why fight Dawson, a tough fight that nobody wants to see when you can go to Canada and fight Pascal for much more money for a guy with clear weaknesses? Dawson called out Hopkins for so long but as soon as he lost to Pascal, Hopkins-Pascal was signed in 3 weeks.

the way the fight game works today is, take the least risk for the most reward....plain and simple.
