They fight, Fighter A wins a close decision. (7-5)

Is it plausible to say that while Fighter A won the battle, Fighter B won the war? Not in the sense of a moral victory, but that Fighter B actually deserves more credit, even as the loser, in this specific situation?

Fight 2: Same as before. Fighter A is in his prime, Fighter B is past his prime. Fighter A is the heavy favorite, Fighter B is the heavy underdog. Fighter A wins,close but not controversial 7-5.

Which loser deserves more credit for their loss?
