Not the right approach though...

I like when they at least pretend that this is a professional sport/competition not just business

Why? This aint start in today's era or the Mayweather era.......this started in the 80s with Sugar Ray Leonard.

He laid the foundation that this generation takes to heart.

You wont see today's American top draws being broke 5 years after retirement like those guys back then:manny:

didn't say that it started now...

It's cool that they make money but I don't like when they admittedly don't fight young turks cause "they are too dangerous and now well known enough yet..."

It's always been this way though breh..... @hyperman25 can lecture you on how avoided Young Marvelous was on the rise, we can talk about how even the GOAT Sugar Ray Robinson ducked Charles Burley:

Burley wanted great Sugar Ray Robinson but the great Sugar Ray wanted no part of him. Robinson, supposedly watching Burley ringside, told his manager, “I’m too pretty to fight Charley Burley.” Robinson avoided Burley and Burley always believed that he was the better fighter and of course, we would never know if Burley was right.

O’ Loughlin moved Burley to California with the idea of getting Burley better opponents and higher purses. Burley became the California middleweight champion by knocking out Jack Chase, who previously never ended a fight on the canvas. In 1944, he added a victory over Archie Moore to his resume- a fight that he took on short notice. The day that he defeated Moore, he was busy making aircraft at the local factory. (Burley was rejected by the military due to a busted eardrum.)

By 1946, Burley had 60 fights, mostly with heavier fighters but he could not get the big money fights against many of the top rate white fighters. Plenty of inferior fighters gain their shots whereas Burley had to work as a garbage collector to pay the bills. By 1950, Burley’s career was on the down side and yet no one would fight him. Burley decided to retire and just go to work. Burley walked away from the sport that for the previous decade ignored him. In 1992, the International Boxing Hall of Fame inducted him but Burley died earlier in the year- thus missing out on his career being honored.

So why did Burley fail to gain a shot of the title? Was it the various changes in management or was it due to the lack of flash in his fighting style? Burley beat many of the best fighters, so racism played a role. Other black fighters did gain their opportunity, including Sugar Ray Robinson and Ezzard Charles while Burley fail to get his. Burley’s biggest sin may have been that he was an honest fighter and maybe he just didn’t know the right person. Many of these fighters such as Sugar Ray Robinson were in no hurry to give Burley a shot at their titles. In the 40 and 50’s, connection with the right people including the mob was important and Burley did not have appeared to have those connections. At least one of his managers bought his contract to keep Burley from fighting his other fighters! Burley never received his deserve shot and the real pity is that many boxing fans were denied a chance to see a great fighter practice his craft at the highest level.

Like I said breh, it's always been this way and never will change.

After the press conference, Mayweather visited DeGale's hotel room and spent some time with him.

DeGale is now a promotional free agent and Mayweather expressed his interest in signing him up to a contract. It was the final fight of DeGale's promotional agreement with Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport.

But DeGale doubts that will happen. He feels strongly that Mayweather places all of the attention on himself at the expense of his own fighters - and in his opinion Mayweather stole the spotlight from the boxers last Saturday.

"Mayweather was going on about a robbery but he chats a load of rubbish. He came to find me at my hotel at 4am to see if I was alright. He came with his entourage and spent 45 minutes with me, talking about the fight, saying I'm a great fighter and that he wants to sign me. But my next fight is at home, I want to fight in front of my own people and feel the atmosphere at The O2 or at The Emirates. We've got the best boxing fans in the world and fighting in London is second to none," DeGale told The Mirror.

"It's possible I could work with Mayweather in the future but I doubt it. It's all about Mayweather, even boxing on one of his shows, it was all about himself, it always came back to him. It was a great experience but it’s time to come home now."

According to DeGale, he is likely going to resume his working relationship with Hearn - but it's not clear if they will work under a contract or on a fight by fight basis.

"Al Haymon is my advisor but I'm a free agent now. It looks like I'll work with Eddie Hearn again because Sky Sports is the best place to be and he's one of the best promoters in the world and we've worked well together," DeGale said.

Cuadras Sides With Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. To Take Down Canelo

By Miguel Rivera

Former WBC super flyweight world champion Carlos Cuadras is siding with the underdog, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32 KOs), to beat their countryman Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) on May 6.

The biggest fight for Mexican boxing in several years was finalized last Friday. The contest takes place at a catch-weight of 164-pounds. Canelo will head up by 10.5-pounds and Chavez Jr. comes down from super middleweight by 3.5-pounds.

HBO Pay-Per-View will carry the contest and the venue has yet to be determined.

At the end of the day, Cuadras is hoping that we all get a very exciting contest and not a repeat of the Cinco De Mayo mega-fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2015.

"Sometimes the most anticipated fights are the most boring, like when Floyd Mayweather and Pacquiao took place. Everyone waiting for four years for that fight to happen and it was boring. I hope that does not happen with our fighters. Mexicans are the type to deliver and hopefully it's a great fight," Cuadras said.

There is a big size difference and Cuadras predicts "size will matter" when the two boxers step in the ring - as long as Chavez Jr, properly trains.

"I have a reserved prediction... it's difficult. Canelo has made a good run in his career, good fights. Chavez has the power in his hands and more weight. I'm going with Chávez, but I need to go to the gym and make sure that he's training every day to beat Canelo," Cuadras said.

"Chavez Jr. has to prepare very well for this fight. The truth is that he is bigger and he has a lot of weight on his side. It can be a factor that affects him after the second half of the fight... he may get tired, but I think Chavez can beat Canelo."

Oscar Valdez Yearns For Gary Russell Unification Bout

By Steve Kim

2016 was a big one for Oscar Valdez (21-0, 19 KOs) as he fulfilled a life-long dream of becoming a world champion. On July 23rd he blew out Matias Rueda in two rounds to capture the WBO featherweight title.

He made the first defense of that crown on November 5th by stopping Japanese challenger, Hiroshige Osawa in seven. Now, he'd like to consolidate the division.

Valdez said to BoxingScene.com in a recent interview - "If it were up to me I'd unify my title. There's a lot of good fighters out there. You got great fighters like Lee Selby, Abner Mares, (Leo) Santa Cruz, Carl Frampton and those are fights people want to see and I would want to fight those guys.

When asked if there was one particular fight he yearns for the most, he answered - "Gary Russell (27-1, 16 KOs) because he has that green (WBC) belt."

Currently the featherweight division is filled with well-regarded belt-holders and solid contenders.

"They're all very good fighters, I've got nothing but respect for them, it's nothing personal but if you want to be considered the best you have to fight the them - so why not?," said Valdez, from the Jackrabbit Boxing Academy in Long Beach where he put his days work with trainer Manuel Robles.

As of now, Valdez does not have his next fight scheduled.

Chavez Jr's lack of dedication to the sport will always make him an underdog against cats that in theory could be his equal or slightly greater. Canelo is definitely more talented and skilled, but his love for boxing enhances that. Chavez is talented and skilled too, but he didn't respect the sport like he should have and its cost him.

He looked good in his last fight. I just hope he builds off of that performance. I honestly think he's gonna give Canelo the fight of his life and make it close win or lose and we end up getting a rematch in September and the #GGGoodBoys fight gets pushed back to 2018.:snoop:

Chavez needs to go to that body early an often, constantly jab his way in and push Canelo backwards. Make it a close quarter battle where Canelo constantly has to reset his stance so he can't get full leverage on his shots. Chavez has to stay active in that fight at all times. If he just stands in front of Canelo, he's gonna get carved up with counters. shyt will look like Gatti vs Daamgard. Canelo doesn't like to move, if he makes Canelo move, hes already taking away of some his effectiveness. He's not like a Floyd/Pac/Thurman/Cotto etc..., where he can rip shots on the move effectively.

If Chavez can
- attack the body early an often
- constantly close the distance with his jab
- stay active in close range
- move his head and feint to take away some of those counters
- constantly make him move and reset

I can definitely see him banking some rounds or even possibly winning.

I feel like both will step up when the other is trying to rest, but it's who will be more effective during those moments is what really is gonna be the difference.

This is probably the 1st Canelo fight I cared about since the Lara fight.

:mjlol: at Chavez's mutant power being able to absorb your punishment while stealing your prime in the process. This nikka is Bishop lite.

It's like you win, but lose at the same time.

Sergio and Fonfara aint been the same since beating Jr's ass. Both got that work from guys they were supposed to beat.

Canelo might end up fukking himself in the long run if this turns out to be a grueling fight. :manny:
