On This Day: Muhammad Ali gains revenge over Joe Frazier in their rematch

On January 28 1974, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier renewed their bitter rivalry

MUHAMMAD ALI craved revenge over Joe Frazier in 1974. Almost three years had elapsed since “Smokin” Joe won a 15-round decision in their epic opener.

On January 28 he was given the chance and it was staged, again, inside Madison Square Garden. But with both having shed their invincible cloaks – Frazier had been bombed by George Foreman while Ali had split two bouts with Ken Norton – part two lacked the lustre of the original. Nonetheless, the intense dislike intensified between the pair. In the lead up, they were invited to review their first encounter on ABC’s Wide World of Sport. They ended up rucking in the studio, rolling around on the floor as if they were fighting in a bar. It was an ugly spectacle, for which they were both fined, but it heightened the anticipation for their rematch.

Ali began confidently, his jab like a spear, and in the second Frazier staggered under fire. Ali swarmed. Frazier was in trouble. The referee, Tony Perez, believing the round was over, leapt between them and denied Ali his chance for an early win.

“Somebody called ‘bell,'” Perez explained later, “so I stopped them both. Then the gong table yelled, ‘Tony, the round isn’t over.’ Usually I hear the bell, but the bell was defective before the fight. They had to call the electrician to fix it. It was only five to eight seconds.”

When they resumed, to complete the final 10 seconds of action in the session, Frazier had recovered.
Ali boxed well, showing he had learned lessons from fight one, and regularly exploded left and rights of his onrushing rival. Frazier, although he landed several versions of his honey punch, that leaping left hook, he struggled to repeat his success of the first encounter.

After 12 intense rounds Frazier objected to the unanimous decision that went against him but his swollen and puffy face told the correct story. Ali was unmarked. He had earned the right to challenge for his old title, 10 years after he had won it, and seven years after it had been stripped from his waist.

Good but we need to be careful with this too

I mean "not enrolled yet" =/= dirty

some fighters on the list aren't even really on the WBC route. Bradley always fought for the WBO title, cause that's where Arum pushes him and all of his fighters
Last time he had to do anything with WBC was in 2011
Since then he only fought interim, international or world championship fights for the WBO version of those belts. So it's hard to imagine how he would be even enrolled.

Kovalev also... We know his promoters don't want the Stevenson fight. Regardless of that Kovalev just recently lost his belts and probably gonna rematch with Ward and the WBC belt isn't at stake there. Last time Kovalev had the chance to fight for the WBC belt, Duva blocked it but I think that was before the Vada - WBC agreement.

Spence goes on the IBF route for a time now so there's also that...
Liam Smith also just recently lost his WBO belt so I guess he became ranked after that and he didn't fight since then and now he will fight for WBO interim
Ortiz goes on the WBA route now and is the supposed mandatory for the winner of Joshua vs Klitschko
Gilberto Ramirez has a WBO belt (and also an Arum fighter) and Jessie Hart will have a shot on that belt soon probably
Julian Williams just had an IBF title shot
Troyanovsky just lost his IBF belt

So idk... on one hand I absolutely agree with this whole WBC - VADA program, clean boxing is needed and I think it can be even useful to put the pressure on some fighters by releasing the names of the ones who don't want to get enrolled on the other hand though I think it ca be harmful if they just put out a lit like this lowkey suggesting that the fighters listed have some dirt on their hands even though some of them are clearly started on and going on different routes or just became ranked by the WBC in the last 1-2 months but their name is still in the same bracket as of those who otherwise should have done the testig already but didn't do it yet and probably don't want to cause they really have something to hide.

ANDRE BERTO CHECKS SHAWN PORTER; SAYS HE STILL HAS NO OPPONENT AND NO FIGHT DATE: "KEEP MY NAME OUT YA MOUTH"
By Ben Thompson | January 27, 2017

andreberto.jpg

Contrary to the recent announcement made by former world champion Shawn Porter, a potential April showdown with fellow former world champion Andre Berto has yet to be officially agreed upon by both parties. "Until that phone rings from boss man [Al Haymon] about the fight date or the money, there is no fight date and no opponent," stated Berto, who spoke to FightHype.com shortly after Porter made the announcement. Berto clarified that although he has no problems with facing anyone inside the ring, until Haymon informs him that the business side is taken care of, there's no point of even saying his name.

"We not in high school. I beat enough ass out on the school yard for free. This is business. You just can't try to make a fight on your own without the other party knowing shyt about the business. That's not how it goes," Berto explained. "Like I said before, as of right now, no fight date, no opponent We stay ready on this side, but until I get a phone call, keep my name out ya mouth!"

:scust: at Berto
Berto is smart to pass on him. He need to cash himself out against a star.
