Ward bout to rehydrate 15lbs and dump that title on fight nightArtur Beterbiev is About To Become Mandatory To Andre Ward
By Luke Furman
Montrealer of Russian origin, light heavyweight contender Artur Beterbiev (11-0, 11 KOs), is about to become the IBF's mandatory challenger to world champion Andre Ward (31-0, 15 KOs).
The IBF, and Beterbiev's promoter Yvon Michel, have gone through hell in their failed attempts to secure an opponent for a final world title eliminator.
Beterbiev, ranked second since his knockout win over Gabriel Campillo in April 2015, has been unable to find a dance to partner for the eliminator and the sanctioning body is tired of wasting time.

The six top-ranked contenders, including Beterbiev, have until March 23 at 5 pm to demonstrate their intention to fight in a final eliminator.
Other contenders contacted by the IBF include Sergey Kovalev, Erik Skoglund, Enrico Kölling, Dominic Bösel and Robert Stieglitz.
Almost every name mentioned has already rejected the idea of fighting Beterbiev in a final eliminator.
If no contender is willing to fight Beterbiev by Thursday, then the Russian puncher will become the mandatory challenger by default.
Ward captured the WBA, WBO, IBF titles with a twelve round unanimous decision over Sergey Kovalev in November. There is an immediate rematch clause, and the second fight is being targeted for June 17 in Las Vegas.
Michel wants Beterbiev to get his crack at Ward (or Kovalev) by September. Beterbiev is scheduled to fight on a date in May after a planned fight in April, against Sullivan Barrera, fell apart after the Cuban fighter refused to go forward with the contest.
"The fight should take place no later than September, which should give Ward more than enough time to face Kovalev," Yvon Michel told RDS.
"If the champion is not ready, he could [then] give up the belt and Beterbiev could fight for the title. [Until then], we do not want to leave Beterbiev inactive and he should fight somewhere in May. We should have news very soon. "

Fury's Trainer Denied Entry Into New Zealand For Parker FightHughie Fury, the mandatory challenger to Joseph Parker's WBO heavyweight title, will be without his trainer and father, Peter Fury, in his corner after he was denied entry into New Zealand. The Englishman was confident he'd be granted entry after submitting his application, despite having spent 10 years in jail after being convicted of drug possession and intent to supply back in 1995 and a further two years for money-laundering in 2008.However, his access has officially been denied by immigration based on"character grounds".In a statement, Immigration New Zealand confirmed that Fury had applied for the obligatory "special direction" exemption required for anyone who has spent more than five years in prison, but that request had been rejected."His case was fully considered and all representations submitted on Mr Fury’s behalf were taken into account before a decision was made to decline his request for a special direction," reads the statement. In 2013, Peter Fury's application for a visa into the United States was also denied due to those two prison terms. He was unable to be in the corner for his nephew, Tyson Fury, who got off the floor to score a knockout victory over former world champion Steve Cunningham at New York's Madison Square Garden. Peter watched the fight from Canada. It's understood the title bout will go ahead as scheduled at Auckland's Vector Arena on May 6th.

Sullivan Barrera vs. Felix Valera in Play, HBO Latino on April 15
By Elisinio Castillo
Cuban light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (18-1, 13 KOs) is returning in the month of April, but not against the fighter he was initially scheduled to face.
There were discussions that Barrera would face Artur Beterbiev in an IBF final eliminator, but the contest never happened when Barrera walked away from the bout citing financial concerns.
Barrera is going to return on April 15 at the Mohegan Casino in Connecticut as part of an HBO Latino broadcast. He will battle Felix Valera (14-1, 12 KO), a man who once owned an interim-title under the World Boxing Association (WBA).

"I'm happy to be back on HBO and would like to thank my promoter Main Events and the TV station for organizing this event," Barrera said to George Ebro. "It's been a difficult start to the year, but I've stayed in the gym waiting for an opportunity like this that brings me closer to my goal of fighting for a world title.''
Yvon Michel, promoter of Beterbiev, accused Barrera of playing games and running away from the contest.
"He never had a real interest in the fight," Barrera said of Michel. "At heart I wanted to get out of the horizon to say that I had been afraid of Beterbiev. He's playing dirty to take his fighter to a world title fight."
Valera was a silver medalist at the 2010 Central American Games, and has developed his career almost entirely in the Dominican Republic, except for a couple of presentations in Russia.
"My opponent is a good fighter and we have studied him in the gym," added the Cuban, who trains under the guidance of coach Derrick Santos. "We will be ready for anything he can bring on April 15."
Valera's sole defeat came last May, when he lost a decision to hot prospect Dmitry Bivol, who was only 6-0 at the time.
