Crawford: I Won't Get Credit for Beating Pacquiao AND Lomachenko - Boxing News

Crawford: I Won't Get Credit for Beating Pacquiao AND Lomachenko

By Keith Idec

NEW YORK – Terence Crawford feels underappreciated.

The unbeaten, two-division champion suspects that as long as he stays at 140 pounds, he won’t be able to satisfy fans who want him to move up to welterweight. Crawford doesn’t even think victories over Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao and Vasyl Lomachenko will make him more credible among his harshest critics.

“I never get all the credit I deserve, but that’s boxing,” Crawford said before a press conference Tuesday at Madison Square Garden to announce his May 20 fight against Felix Diaz (HBO). “I take it and roll with it, and just keep on winning and doing what I have to do to become one of the greats. Beating Lomachenko and Pacquiao, all they’re gonna do is criticize me. They’re gonna say the same thing – Lomachenko’s too small or Pacquiao’s past his prime.

“So it’ll take me to fight somebody that’s in their prime, that they think, ‘Oh, well, you’ve got these two guys in their prime and they’re fighting each other and Terence beat him in a tremendous fashion.’ Maybe they’ll give me my credit then, but who knows?”

Crawford (30-0, 21 KOs), the WBC/WBO super lightweight champion, has been trying to secure a fight against Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38 KOs) for the past year-and-a-half. Pacquiao appears headed toward a meaningless fight against Australia’s Jeff Horn (16-0-1, 11 KOs) on July 2 in Brisbane, but Bob Arum, who promotes Pacquiao and Crawford, has said a Pacquiao-Crawford fight is possible for later this year.

Lomachenko (7-1, 5 KOs) has said he could move up to lightweight later this year, but currently fights two weight classes below Crawford. The Ukrainian southpaw will return to the ring Saturday night, when he’ll defend his WBO world super featherweight title against Jason Sosa (20-1-4, 15 KOs) at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland (HBO).

The 29-year-old Crawford expects to eventually move up to 147 pounds, though he’s not sure that’ll silence his critics, either.

“It’s gonna be the same,” said Crawford, who has fought five times at 140 pounds since moving up two years ago. “Because when I was at 135, everybody was screaming, ‘Oh, he’s too big for 35.’ The same thing that they’re saying right now is the same thing that they were saying when I was at 135. Then, when I moved up, I had like two fights and they was like, ‘Oh, you need to move up to 147.’ I was like, ‘Well, I just moved up to 140.’ So when I move up to 147, they’re gonna be like, ‘You need to go up to 154 and fight Klitschko.’ ”

When asked why some people keep pressing him to move up, Crawford claimed it’s because they can’t wait for him to suffer his first professional defeat.

“When you look at it,” Crawford said, “when you have a good fighter that’s on the verge of being great, you wanna do any and everything you possibly can to see him lose. Same thing they did with Mayweather. You know, wanting Mayweather to fight a Triple-G, knowing how big Triple-G is, but you want the odds to be so stacked against this man, so he just can lose. So it’s never gonna stop.”

A KO win is the clearest and most respected win in boxing you can get (Unless its some sort of Godzaghe/Manfredo stoppage :scust:)

You can be getting your ass kicked up and down that ring from pillar to post, but if you finally knock that nikka out, then you pretty much own his soul no question.

Its not like you came back and won a controversial decision that can be argued until infinity. You knocked him or her out. nikkas can't refute that. :ohlawd:

If he don't get outta here with this made up stuff....acting like people are rooting AGAINST him:camby:

They have you ranked #5 P4P and claim you're the best fighter around the 140-147 weight class....with your top 3 victories being Viktor Postol, Ricky Burns, and Yuriorkis Gamboa:comeon:

What do you mean "you wont get any credit" when you just won the BWAA and ESPN Boxer of The Year Award just 2 years ago?:usure:

I guess he has to motivate himself somehow:dahell:

Gerald Washington one of Klitschko's sparring partners?:lupe:

Washington could possibly be better than Joshua's best win, Brehzeale. This is a good move by Dr. Steel Hammer to get some good sparring in:ehh:

Shabranskyy: Canelo is Hitting Like a Heavyweight in Sparring

By Miguel Rivera

Light heavyweight contender Vyacheslav Shabranskyy of Ukraine is one of the sparring partners who are assisting Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez for his upcoming contest with country rival Julio Cesar Chavez Junior.

Their HBO Pay-Per-View fight is scheduled for May 6th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The fight takes place at a catch-weight of 164.5-pounds. Canelo is coming up from the junior middleweight limit of 154-pounds, while Chavez Jr. is dropping down from 168.

canelo-alvarez%20(9)_13.jpg

Chavez Jr., over the last few years, has fought as high as 172-pounds. He has a big height and reach advantage over Canelo.

Shabranskyy very tall himself and has a record of 17 wins, 1 loss and 14 of his triumphs have come by knockout. He suffered his first career defeat last December, when he was stopped by top contender Sullivan Barrera.

In a recent interview, Shabranskyy discussed his sparring sessions with Canelo - and says the Mexican boxer is punching with a lot of power

"We did like six rounds, but for four minutes [in each round]. He's punching like a heavyweight, he looks good," said the Eastern European boxer to Villainfy Media .

But former opponent Alfredo Angulo, who was stopped by Canelo in nine rounds when they fought at a catch-weight of 155-pounds in 2014, does not believe Canelo has that kind of power.

"The truth is that I fought with Canelo and I did not feel that he had that kind of punch. Maybe (because Canelo is gaining weight), he has a bit more of an advantage [in that area], but Chavez is a natural 168-pounder. He just has to take care of himself to get down as low as 164.5-pounds and then hydrate so he is well for the fight," Angulo said.

"They (Canelo's team ) should have called me to box with Canelo. If they want a sparring partner who has the style of Chavez, a Mexican, what other fighter has the style?"

Austin Trout Offers Miguel Cotto a Chance for Revenge in Rematch

By Miguel Rivera

If he wants to go in that direction, former four division world champion Miguel Cotto has the opportunity to avenge one of his five career defeats.

On December 1, 2012, the Puerto Rican superstar lost a unanimous decision to then World Boxing Association (WBA) 154-pounds champion Austin Trout, in what was Cotto's first career defeat at New York's Madison Square Garden of Manhattan.

It was a surprise for Cotto, who was coming off one of the best performances of his career when he lost a competitive twelve round decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5 of that same year.

cotto-trout-fight%20%289%29.jpg

Cotto was very upset the scores he received in the Trout loss. They all saw him as a wide loser, with tallies of 117-111, 117-111 and 119-109. Then he took 10 months off, before returning in the middleweight division.

He never mentioned Trout again. But now Trout is mentioning him.

"I would absolutely give him the rematch. And more so right now that he doesn't have anyone to fight," Trout told Jose Sanchez. "I can make the weight. Absolutely. And if he wants to fight in June, I would be more than ready by that date."

"I do not know why he does not want the rematch. I think [Cottos trainer] Freddie Roach is an intelligent man. I think Freddie is the one who keeps him away from me."

Cotto is hunting for a new opponent, after his ring return on Feb. 25 in Texas was canceled after scheduled opponent James Kirkland withdrew with a fractired nose.

One possible obstacle to the Cotto-Trout rematch was the cold war between Cotto's promoter, the Roc Nation Sports, and Trout's adviser Al Haymon. The differences emerged years ago, when Haymon was a music entrepreneur and was sued by Beyonce, who is the wife of Roc Nation owner Jay-Z.

But according to Trout's manager, Bob Spagnola, the agreement between Trout and Haymon expired on March 31.

"Some time ago we approached representatives of Miguel Cotto regarding a rematch, but they told us they were not interested," said Spagnola. "But if the obstacle was Al Haymon, that's already settled."

he was upset he lost wide? :heh: hell the 117-111 was generous...119-109 was prolly the accurate score maybe 118-110..but no more than that..he got his ass whooped...he needs to run this back..no one wants to see him face kirkland, rios, or the unknown jap....you can actually sell that fight
