RIP The Truth

Former heavyweight champion Carl "The Truth" Williams, who took Larry Holmes 15 rounds before losing a controversial decision for the IBF title in 1985, has died. He was 53.

Williams died April 7 in Valhalla, N.Y., according to The New York Times. His sister, Shirl Parsons, told the newspaper that her brother died of complications from throat cancer.

Williams retired in 1997. He won 21 fights by knockout and finished with a career record of 30-10.

"He was a phenomenal fighter with a big heart," Roy Jones Jr. said of Williams, according to The Times. "What earned him the greatest amount of respect was the fact that he never ducked anyone."

Williams acquired his nickname for his ability to make believers of his opponents, particularly Holmes, and critics, too.

Holmes and Williams met in Reno, Nev., in May 1985. Williams won his first 16 fights as a pro but was still a relative unknown as he went toe to toe with Holmes with the IBF title on the line.

"I underestimated the Truth that night," Holmes told The Times on Monday. "When I jabbed, he jabbed. We both had similar styles. It was like looking at myself in a mirror. He was strong and tall with a great reach, and I was fortunate enough to wear him down late with a few hard body blows, but not before he gave me a black eye. He really had my number."

According to The Times, Williams won six of his next seven fights, the last a victory over Bert Cooper in 1987 for the USBA heavyweight title. He defended the crown three times before getting knocked out by Mike Tyson just 93 seconds into their July 1989 fight in Atlantic City.

I don't see what the big deal is with Broner getting put down in sparring...

shyt happens all the time in sparring and ain't Spence a jr middleweight?

If anything I give Broner props for training with a dude much bigger than him but I don't understand how training with a 154 puncher is going to help him against Paulie...Power is not a concern with Paulie, he can't even knock his grandmother out...

Why would he be sparring a left handed fighter for Pauilie. Dude is there to work with floyd.

You may get dropped and get right back up but rumors are he got ko'ed cold

It's the norm for pro's to usually spar 1-2 divisions above your norm, so you have knowing to worry about power/chin issues comes fight time, which is the reason why you here stories of Mayweather beats on and stops JMW and MW in sparring. And they were prepping for the south paw stance which Paulie uses at times, who's to say what they expected from Spence, he is a solid grade A prospect but green fighter, Broner isn't supposed to let that happen, he is supposed to be world class........................

Paulie switches back and forth often during fights(brittle hands), so you have to prepare yourself to get in there with a south paw, or you could end up on the bad end of a boxing lesson

Getting dropped or worked on in sparring is pretty isn't out of the ordinary. But how many World Class / Top Fighters literally get KO'd in sparring? Getting literally knocked out with 16 oz gloves and headgear is definitely a cause for concern if you're in Broner's camp. The gradual thing to do is spar bigger fighters when you are moving up in weight. Floyd was sparring Jr Middleweights while he was a Lightweight / Jr Welterweight.

I feel you breh, it's just the nature of the game now. You got more boxer stans than you do actual boxing fans nowadays. Donaire lost fair and square and him not training well and taking Rigo lightly is his fault, but now you got everybody saying he was exposed, and he wasn't HOF material, and etc..

Donaire was one of the rare cats who was icing dudes cold at the elite level (Vic and Montiel), but nikkas act like that wasn't impressive at all.

Donaire is a force to be reckoned with and I wouldnt be surprised to see him put his next opponent's lights out...regardless of who it is. He was exposed though. His boxing ability was exposed and we can see now that counterpunchers with speed will give him problems, especially ones that dont come right to him. His discipline was exposed. If he wants to stay near the top, he has gotta show more focus in training. Remember, he was about to cancel this fight because his wife was having complications with the pregnancy.

Rigo is a tough guy to hit, but still, thats what sparring is for. I doubt Donaire had the caliber of sparring needed given the opponent because he looked lost for a large part of the fight.

Was probably on speakerphone with Garcia like...
"yeah, just sparred 12 rounds"
