You know, I wonder how things would have been if the WBC became extinct. Which almost happened 10 years ago. For those of you who don't know the story, this is what happened...
In the late 90's, Roy Jones was the WBC LHW champ. He decided to vacate the belt and move up to HW (he had a fight scheduled with Buster Douglas). The belt was then put on the line in a fight between Michael Nunn and Graciano Rocchigiani, who were the #1 and #2 ranked contenders. Rocchigiani won the fight, and the belt. Then for whatever reason, Roy changed his mind and moved back down to LHW. He requested that the be reinstated as the champ, to which the WBC granted. They stripped Rocchigiani, claiming that he was just an interim titleholder and not the real champ. He then proceed to sue the WBC, and won. Courts ordered them to pay him 30 million. Which the WBC couldn't afford. The legal battle went on for years, until they settled out of court, and Rocchigiani settled for less money. Had he stuck to his guns and demanded to be paid the full 30 mil, the WBC woulda been put outta business.
I sometimes be wondering what it woulda been like if they did get put outta business. The WBC has almost been considered the most legit sanctioning body. Anybody who has the green belt is considered the "man" in his division. Wonder which organization woulda filled the void and/or if another minor body would rise to prominence.
