he didn't get his first cap until Taylor picked him early 90's and we didn't get to another world cup till 98

In-between them years we had Venables in charge who favoured the Spurs players over other players and didn't really pick him

It also didn't help him getting injuries at the wrong time just before tournaments like 98

The man is without doubt is a PL legend and one of the best strikers we have ever produced

Agree with most of this, but, and I say this as a massive fan of Ian Wright Wright Wright!!, he wasn’t great when he did play for England either. There were probably a few mitigating reasons for it, but he never seemed to be quite the same for the English as for Arsenal.

Venables was a problem, as you say.

He was a lot better than Ferdinand and Cole, although I am sure United and Newcastle fans might disagree. In fact, it was probably the brilliance of Wrighty that killed any chance that Andy Cole might have had coming through the ranks with us. Cole was supposed to have been a bit of an a$$hole when he was a youngster at Arsenal, too, and George Graham didn’t like him. Shame, as I’m sure he would have been brilliant with us and a great successor to IW.
