am not listening to whole thing just clips that are posted, but this narrative i keep hearing in clips of podcasts being super complicated to produce is the opposite narrative of what podcast are about/ what's made them so popular in the past 5 years. You really need nothing but 1. a interesting topic 2. a recording device 3. uploading platform
So this narrative as if Joe is the mastermind behind some HBO type production show is![]()
As someone who used to have a podcast, it's harder and easier than people think.
From a technical standpoint, it's really not all that hard. I mean, you'd be surprised at how many podcast are pumped out in fukking mono. Really the toughest thing technically is audio leveling and noise cancellation. The former is relatively easy, the former is mostly handled by equipment.
It all goes back to business, regardless of how lazy Mal or Rory might have been with the podcast, it didn't really blow until it was the 3 of them.
Just like everyday struggle blew with all, joe and nes. Regardless of who did the heavy lifting the show was a hit because of the chemistry.
If Joe felt like he was doing them a solid by paying them at all cool.
But you can't own something have, a deal and contracts and then expect your employees to come in every day see things grow and not want either more money or a piece of the business especially when they are integral to that growth.
That's nuts,
The problem is Joe at the end of the day.
He hooked them up, as friends (so he claims) the show popped during that run, the friends wanted more and Joe was like nah y'all don't even do nothing.
So instead of breaking off his homies more while increasing responsibility via contracts, growing the pod more, and smoothing things over.
He shuts it all down to yet again move on to something different.
The only thing is now it's a pattern that the world can see and I don't know if the people follow him again.
He'd do well to start rapping again![]()
All facts.
This really has nothing to do with the worker vs boss mentality some of these brehs are trying to drag this into. This is just about good and bad business.
Having listened to most of the episode, despite all the yelling that he's doing, Joe's real issue is that he's upset that Rory and Mal wanted a bigger cut of the money when he was the one putting up all the monetary investments into the show. All the shouting about negotiations and whatnot is really just a smokescreen to cover for that specific issue. Whole lotta problems with that approach, though.
First off, he tried to use music industry negotiations and tactics, when one of the guys he tried it on was someone who worked in the industry.
For all the analogies to startups and business, it's crazy to act like sweat equity isn't a thing. While they may not have chipped in monetarily, the show was successful based off of the content those four made. Additionally, you can't hold not negotiating deals for the pod against them when they have contracts that at minimum state that Joe has final say. If you're at the table with someone and they know you can't pull the trigger on the deal, it's really just a matter of time before they ask (politely or not) to bush you in favor of the person who has the say for the sake of brevity among other reasons.
Logical business has also shown that at some point when revenues increase, the smart thing to do is increase compensation. If the pod is supposedly in line to make hundreds of millions (sure
), you're crazy if you think people will be cool with making the exact same amount as when it was making a fraction of that. But that leads back to the money thing. While Ian was attempting to get his cosign/flex on, he let it slip that they had no deal when leaving Spotify, and Joe decided to increase everyone's pay. Basically, Joe's mad that the show was/has been operating at a larger than expected loss while he was handing out extra cash. Nah, breh. If you're the boss making that decision, that's not a THEM problem, that's a YOU problem. In fact, doubly so. He made that call to pump the cash, and it was his call to fukk up the Spotify deal, along with turning down other deals putting them in that situation in the first place.
Long story short, Joe can say what he wants since it's a free world and all, but this is some bytch nikka shyt. He out here asking them to work on some handshake homie shyt (bringing up Ice and Ish being willing to come in is some petty, manipulative shyt), but then turning around and trying to keep it all business when asked to cash them out on the same terms.
