It was a bad deal to Joe. saw a reddit comment say they werent gonna be able to release on youtube. That's on top of Spotify wanting dibbs or w/e on everybody in the podcasts other ventures. So if he did create his own network, spotify wouldve had their hands in it. even if it was shyt that didnt have anything to do with Spotify.

This is on top of Joe saying Spotify wasnt honoring shyt in the first deal like "showing them the numbers" or w/e joe said and Spotify wouldve ate the lion's share of deals like Prize Picks.
Yeah…

But Joe did stop posting to youtube for a while until he saw how his audience stopped growing.

He also eventually started putting the pod back on Spotify….For free.

There was a deal to be made that worked. Joe just gonna Joe:

- Def Jam
- Slaughterhouse
- Complex
- Rory & Mal
- Melissa & Rosenberg
- See the thing is
Etc.

I never understood the knock of him putting the pod back on spotify. Why wouldnt he put it back on spotify? There is a large podcast listening audience there that probably doesnt want to download another app to listen to a pod. For example, I listen to all my podcasts on Apple and just use spotify strictly for music. There are probably ppl on the opposite side that use spotify for their music and podcast needs, espeically with the ad campaign spotify put out.

Did you not see nor hear any pods during his last 6 months in the spotify deal....? I was gonna post some clips but there's honestly too many to choose from.

Nobody is knocking him for putting the pod on Spotify, Youtube, or anywhere else. It's the way Joe went about the shyt when they were offering him millions.......... and then turned around and gave it back to Spotify for NOTHING.

Facts. If anything it shows that they were right that Joe was trying to cut them out of their deal which would’ve given them shares of the profit instead of having them on 1099s like everyone now.

The $20 million is some Forbes Magazine, back of the napkin math to promote the show, and for Ian to promote himself as some kind of mastermind.

Prize Picks is their biggest advertiser and they advertise with just about every popular podcast on earth. Do I think they give JBP a decent amount of money? Yes. Do I think it’s 5+ million? No. Just last year they cut their ads after the NBA season finished. They also run like 2 ads per show, if that. I don’t see the ROI.

They’re making money, a lot of it, but all of this shameless promotion is just goofy in the long run and will only make people go look deeper into what’s going on.

It’s not really about Forbes, or Joe, it’s Patreon paying for the promo. You can see in time square they got patreon JBP billboards up right now. It’s them pitching to creators to come over and use them by promoting joe as their biggest success.

The irony is with this move joe is in the best position to get a Joe Rogan type deal now more than ever. Very easy for him to leverage all his potential partnerships with his patreon subs + youtube and turn that into a 100 mill offer. If thats the route he was willing to go

Not sure who’s still reall giving out those type of deals though

Did you really just reply to me saying if they let him release on YouTube with saying if they let him release on YouTube? Also, please stop letting Joe Budden explain business shyt to you lol. That dude isn’t reliable. You have no idea what Spotify would’ve gotten. And if Spotify did have their hands in it - he would’ve gotten paid more money for it. Spotify has been losing money on podcasts. Rory and Mal left because Joe didn’t want to give them equity pay outs as promised because he thought that would be too costly. This is after he walked away from the Spotify deal would’ve given them all guaranteed money so it wouldn’t be his problem. It’s common in business to give people equity in lieu of a higher salary starting out. New companies often do that. He realized that it would be easier to control costs if they were on salary than equity and tried to renegotiate which caused the problems. Despite losing them, he was able to then keep more of the money and invest in other ways.

He tried to make them seem greedy but he basically agreed to pay them in sweat equity and then refused to do accounting when asked and dared them to sue over it, which they didn’t. The show is “better” now because Joe was willing to burn that bridge for his financial benefit in the short term and then when he reached a certain level income - he was able to add new people to continue to gain subscribers and to stop from losing them and also to justify different prices tiers. It’s good business but not any different than what anyone else on patreon does. His business is successful because he’s the de facto hip hop podcast. Cam and Mase’s deal like most deals of they nature has a guaranteed base salary and then you make more for hitting certain metrics. It could be something like they get 35 percent of all money Underdog gets after generating X amount of revenue off their show (I.e. after they get their money back).

Someone like Pat for example, ESPN covers the costs of running his show and salary and then there are going to be specific metrics. Point being - Budden bet on himself and it worked out but by and large, people with Spotify deals make more guaranteed money than people going the independent route. People who stay on that route do it because the sponsors they get allow them to make bread that they’re satisfied with on top of whatever splits they get from YouTube, etc.

A lot of strings came with them millions and like I explained in my prior post, him not putting it back on spotify would just hurt his brand/reach for the pod, since there is probably a large segment of spotify only users who only know him on Spotify. If he has 1M monthly listeners and 35% are spotify only, you think it's smart to cut off 350k listeners to spite Spotify and not help your brand? Them spotify numbers played a role in helping him get the PrizePicks deal and run up the bag wtih patreon(more potential customers).

You talking about him putting it on spotify for free like he aint been putting it on apple podcast for a decade, for free. We just gonna disagree on this spotify thing. :manny:

Joe Rogan gets 14 million listeners per week while Joe gets about 3 million. Joe’s demo is too small to get that type of deal. And the podcast bubble has burst, they aren’t giving big deals like that anymore.
