On Thursday, 247Sports national analyst Ryan Bartow reported that a long-rumored deal between Michigan and Devin Bush Sr. was finalized, as he was hired to become a defensive analyst for the program, following a somewhat similar path to former Paramus Catholic coach Chris Partridge, who was recently promoted to linebackers coach/special teams coordinator on
Jim Harbaugh's staff.
Like Partridge, Bush Sr. has the potential to have a massive effect on Michigan's recruiting abilities. The better news is that it will come in the most talent-rich areas in the country: south Florida.
Another similarity to the Partridge hire is a magnetic personality. Relationships are the engine that drive recruiting, and Bush Sr. is one of the most visible figures in the state. This is because he's a National Champion at the college level and a Super Bowl winner at the NFL level and is a state champion at the high school level. He knows how to motivate and coach the defensive side of the ball at a high level.
The Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas are arguably the two most talent-rich high school football cities in the country. Bush Sr. is easily one of the most respected names in that area because of his legacy as a player both on the field and in the coaching booth. In another situation similar to the aforementioned Partridge, Bush Sr. took a Flanagan team that mightily struggled in the past and won a state championship in three seasons, fielding arguably the top overall defense in high school football.
As a defensive analyst, Bush Sr.'s role will not be one where he can actively recruit (he can pick up the phone, but can't pick it up to make calls), but it will still make a major, major difference in helping get elite Florida recruits more interested in the program and will play a big role in on-campus recruiting in the area.
Michigan has 20 offers out to 2017 prospects in the greater Miami-Fort Lauderdale areas. It's a spot that they are determined to not only make a dent in, but eventually become a force in. This hire is their biggest endeavor in doing so at this point.
