Here some of the biggest names in the UFC weigh in on what could be the upset of the year.
Chael Sonnen (two-time title UFC middleweight title challenger to Anderson Silva)
“Listen, he has two wins over me, it does me no good at all to bash Anderson publically now that our thing is over. But that’s not what I am doing here. I think Anderson is an excellent fighter, an awesome fighter, but he’s just not winning this fight.
“I think Weidman takes Anderson down at will, I think he blows past Anderson’s guard, and I think he finishes him. Taking Anderson down isn’t a hard thing to do. Chris will get to Anderson’s head, hurt him with ground and pound, and submit Anderson within three rounds with a D’arce choke or similar. Weidman is a younger version of me – and a better version when it comes to aspects like top game. I took Anderson down repeatedly, and while I punched him all night, I don’t have the submissions Weidman has. Weidman is going to have the same success I had with a ground attack but then he’s going to choke Anderson.

Chael Sonnen took Anderson down at will and Anderson hardly ever got himself up; he had to wait for the end of the round. When I fought Chael I got up every time and punched him in the face. Anderson is the best fighter of all time, but his weakness is wrestling and Weidman is at least as good as Chael in that area.

Weidman can hurt Anderson with ground and pound and he can submit Anderson.
“The only way I see Weidman not winning is if he has a macho thing where he has illusions of striking with the best striker in the world. But I think he’s too smart for that. I’m not just saying he’s got a great shot, I am picking Weidman to win.”

He is just good enough to land a shot or two and think he can win standing up. But he can’t. No one can beat Anderson standing. If this hit the floor in the first round, it is going to be insane because Weidman could sub Anderson Silva in the very first round.”

“Weidman can absolutely do it. But against Anderson Silva the pressure is on not to make a mistake while he uses his strikes to set up a takedown. That is the critical thing for Weidman. I’ve spent some time with Chris, he’s a smart dude, and he knows he’s not going to try to strike with Anderson. And he has to be conscious of that fact: Striking wise, Weidman cannot compete against Anderson on any level. At all. The reason he was able to land that elbow against Mark Munoz was Munoz was trying to set up for a takedown just as much as Weidman was and, knowing that, Weidman was waiting for the overhand right and that allowed him to land that elbow. He cannot land anything like that against Anderson.
“Weidman has to have the exact same game plan as Chael Sonnen; everyone is saying that is the blueprint for him to win this fight. But here’s the problem: Anderson had two fights with Chael and has had over 30 minutes of Octagon time with that exact strategy. Anderson went through at least two camps expecting that to be his opponent’s strategy. Anderson’s takedown defense is light years away from where it was even two years ago. Remember, takedown defense is only one aspect of one discipline in MMA – and it is one of the easiest aspects to improve on.
“But Weidman can still get him down. Anderson takes anything from a minute to half a round to figure out his opponent’s distance and timing, and Chris has to make use of that to score a takedown. Once he has Anderson down, he can strike very well, and I expect him to pass and force Anderson into a scramble. Anderson usually waits in his guard for a chance to escape or counter, but Chris hits hard enough and is active enough to force Anderson to try to get back up fast. That’s where I see Weidman winning the fight, in the scramble as Anderson tries to get back up.”

Goddamn, I don't think Alves has even fought at all since he lost to Kampmann in 2012. He's been out for well over a year and now he's about to miss MORE time?
I know he lost to Condit & Maia...then there's Rory Mac, Ellenberger, Kampmann, Hendricks, Diaz (still)...isn't Erick Silva a WW now? He probably needs one good "name" fight before he's up there.
Condit caught him and should be ahead of him. Maia is so lucky Kim got hurt. Kim would smash Erick Silva so badly. He would probably dismantle Kampmann and Ellenberger to. The best fight for him next would prob be Mcdonald they seem about even to me.

What? I don't even know where to begin.
1) Condit brutally KO'd Kim and has a much better resume. Saying Kim should be ranked above him is downright dumb. Also, he 'caught' Kim? Come on breh. I guess Condit is a really lucky fighter, he is catching [by KO or sub] fighters all the time [26 of his 28 wins by finish].
2) Maia is really lucky? With a healthy Kim, I have this fight as a toss-up. I could see either fighter winning.
3) Kim would smash Erick Silva? Kim couldn't smash Siyar but now all of a sudden he is going to smash a much better fighter in Silva? Very interesting.
4) He would dismantle Kampmann and Ellenberger? This is just too much. Again, like I said, Kim hasn't smashed lower tier fighters, but now he is going to suddenly dismantle the elite of the 170 pound division? Ellenberger would brutally KO him. Kim's only [small] hope would be to out-wrestle him for 3 rounds, which I don't see happening at all because of Ellenberger's great wrestling. Kampmann would beat him handily as well, great striker with a very underrated ground game. I don't see Kim holding down either one of these fighters for 3 rounds.
5) Rory is better than Kim everywhere except for [maybe] BJJ. Even then, when was the last time Kim submitted someone? Rory takes this pretty easily.

I actually agree that Kim would beat Ellenberger, Kampmann, and Rory. I think he'd beat Rory the easiest out of all of them. Rory doesn't have any kind of above average takedown defense. Dong would do the same to him that he did to Siyar. I'd favor Silva but it would be close. It would depend on his gas tank. I think Kos would be a hard fight for Kim out every one.
I personally think he should fight Mike Pierce if he wins this week. That match up would probably bring out more of a fun fight between two boring fighters.

When's the last time someone heavy-handed took it to Chris? I can't remember how well Sakara did...I don't remember him buzzing Weidman any in that fight. We don't know how he'll react to Anderson's lasers. Weidman doesn't seem very athletic from the 3 or 4 fights of his that I've seen. Sonnen was able to blast across and up under Silva. I see Weidman more of a big, strong technician. His striking and wrestling isn't explosive. He's like a rich man's Phil Davis to me......we shall see.
And Chael was 3/7 on takedowns in the first fight and 1/3 in the second...that's not dominant wrestling...Silva, barring stopping him with the 1st strike he throws(doubtful), will get taken down but he'll probably stuff the majority of attempts...Silva's weakness is getting up, not defending TDs. And that weakness may be more self-imposed since he may just be stalling for a stand up instead of trying to sweep/sub/scramble.

I give Weidman about a 35% chance of winning...his skillset could give the champ fits but he's probably too green to this MMA thing to beat the slickest/craftiest mixed martial artists ever.

Silva is the definition of a martial artist. He will strike and finish this guy in the 2nd Round in the middle of that cage, and it will bring me great joy because he is friends with a mutual acquaintance who pops off a lot about martial arts but probably couldn't do 30 push ups to save his life.
