One of the most prominent Jiu-Jitsu fighters the world has ever seen and one of the inspirations for the creation of the UFC is back on track, but slow down, he won’t be fighting again, at least not for now. The Gracie will play an important role as a referee in a MMA event in Brazil, but it goes beyond that as far as we know.
Last week it was announced he signed a 3-year contract with SportPar, a company responsible for organizing this Brazilian MMA event called Master of Combat (translated from the Portuguese, Mestre do Combate). According to the organizers, it’s goal is to compete for viewership with the UFC and other important events in Brazil.
Rickson, who has spoken lately about not being so excited with the sport nowadays also mentioned that the event will also bring some interesting new rules compared with the traditional MMA events all over the world.
To knock the curiosity down, here are the rules for Master of Combat: the weigh in will take place the same day the fighter steps in the cage; the bouts will only be two rounds, where the first is 10 minutes and the second is only 5 , like it was in Pride just without the third round. There is no victory by points and in the case of a draw (which in this case means no KO or submission during the fight), there will be an extra round; if the draw persists, then come Rickson (1 vote), the central referee (1 vote) and the TV viewers (1 vote) to decide on the winner; on the other hand, if there is a submission or a knockout underway in the end of the rounds, the fight won’t be stopped after the time is finished.
