having your hands up doesnt equal good technique.
hands up didnt become a thing in boxing until cus d'amato introuduced the peekaboo style. with the introduction of bigger gloves and the popularity of tyson, putting your hands high somehow became "good" boxing technique.
with mma that hands up defense is even bigger nonsense because of the tiny gloves. real boxers in mma like conor mcgregor take advantage of this. your hands need to be free to punch off of defensive manouevers. if you stick your hands up to block you have to wait until the opponent stops punching to fire back. plus it squares you up and seriously hinders your vision. its not good defense at all.
your fists are weapons. with that hands up defense your fists are literally pointing at the celings. theres no threat. when you watch a fight between two fighters who use the supposedly properr technique of havimg both hamds up and high its awful.
proper positioning has to be taught and you had to learn it from somewhere. like a george benton or an eddie futch. now its much easier to walk into a gym and shout "hands up", put a towel over your shoulder and claim you are a trainer. despite having no lineage in the sport. its like in bjj you have to be given a belt by a higher belt. so you can trace the lineage all the way back to where your school of bjj comes from. in boxing most of these guys just hang around the gym waiting for a super talent to walk in and make them rich. theres very few people actually teaching correct techniques that have lineage.
If you are a boxer then I will take your word with a grain of salt...
Intuitively, it seems to me that having your hands up is the best form...If you have to attack, your hands are loaded cocked and ready to go...If you have to defend, you are a smaller target...
When I watch fights, I see that the only guys who survive with their hands down are the super quick fighters...However, I don't think that it is a coincidence when those super quick hands down fighters start getting KOd left and right in their later years...
Also, in MMA, the successful hands down fighters have good take down defense and/or are very comfortable with their grappling skills...
All these observations make believe that you are better off with your hands up that not...
