I don't follow tennis development enough to know this - but why has US men rally skill declined in recent decades? It's been 20+ years since Roddikk for god sake. Tennis players are rich so economic incentives aren't the answer here, and tennis players don't have the body type to compete in other sports - there are enough fit US men to provide a pipeline. Doesn't seem to be an issue on the women's side.

The likelihood is like all sports the majority (both the pros and developmental) copy those who are the most successful and that's how you end up with loads of poor imitation robots.

I know people won't like this but America values athleticism over technique (pick a sport the same argument can be had for multiple sports) in the younger years of development and early part of their career.
