Townsend coulda been a contender in singles if she would have taken her conditioning seriously. She is incredibly skilled and has great hands.

That was a great win tonight and probably the best of her career. She steamrolled through the last six games of the second set. I wonder how far that Ostapenko incident will springboard her through this tourney. The crowd is going to be behind her in every match unless she plays Coco.

Fair point but they’ve been in her head from day 1 to lose weight and for whatever reason she refused and seems content being semi successful. There’s a whole body of medical literature on overweight/obese people who are metabolically superior to most and don’t carry pathologies like diabetes. So there’s really no guarantee weight loss would’ve been helpful in her case. Homegirl was in the second set during Ostapenkos timeouts skipping like sugar ray robinson.
