For the final fukking time, tough on crime bills and mandatory minimums don't deter crime. All that does is waste taxpayers money. Any 20 year old who carries a gun doesn't have a convo with his friend that goes:
Andre: Hey Mike, I'd keep that gun at home if I were you, it's a MANDATORY MINIMUM OF 3 YEARS IF YOU'RE FOUND GUILTY!

That cat will carry the gun whether its a 1 year minimum, 3 year minimum, 5 year minimum or no mandatory minimum as it is now (and rightfully so).
It's over a 100 grand per year for the cost of one prisoner doing fed time (2 years plus a day). Imagine you prevent 9-10 kids from doing drug sentences (or whatever) in Joyceville, Collins Bay, Beaver Creek etc. That's a mill saved, easy. Put that mill into some after school programs, community centres, etc.
