Bill Morneau named finance minister as Trudeau’s cabinet unveiled | Toronto Star
Chrystia Freeland, an economic advisor to Trudeau, becomes International Trade Minister at a time when Canada is hammering out trade deals with Pacific nations and Europe. Freeland is one of 15 women to get key portfolios in Canada’s first gender-balanced cabinet of 31 members.
Trudeau himself is also minister of intergovernmental affairs and youth.
Family doctor Jane Philpott, who practiced medicine in west Africa, was named Minister of Health.
Navdeep Bains, a long-time Trudeau friend and advisor, returns to the House of Commons as Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.
Etobicoke MP Kirsty Duncan is Minister of Science.
ohn McCallum takes over Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship and will be tasked to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees before the end of the year, a task that even immigration experts say is daunting.
Carolyn Bennett, a long-time MP and physician, was a shadow critic for aboriginal affairs and becomes Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs.
Trudeau’s cabinet is marked by new blood, including B.C. MP Jody Wilson-Raybould, who was named Minister of Justice and Attorney General. Ottawa MP Catherine McKenna takes over Environment and Climate Change.
Kent Hehr is Minister of Veterans Affairs and associate minister; Harjit Singh Sajjan, former soldier and police officer, is Minister of Defence; MaryAnn Mihychuk is Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour.
Amarjeet Sohi becomes Minister of Infrastructure and Communities; Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities and Maryam Monsef, Minister of Democratic Institutions.
Trudeau’s cabinet also draws on veteran politicians. Ralph Goodale, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness; Stephane Dion is Minsiter of Foreign Affairs; Scott Brison takes over at Treasury Board and Montreal MP Marc Garneau is Minister of Transport.
