Damn Loblaws cutting employees
Even grocery stores ain't safe

What is going on with Canadian retail?
I was being facetious tbh but with retail in particular, I think the issue is clearly related to tech advances. Online shopping is a death knell for big department stores like Sears, which if we are honest, sold garbage to average products at a premium. Canadian retail seems to be a difficult market to break into anyway, see what happened with Target (although that wasnt done right). The few stores that seem to be doing well appeal to a specific niche. Is it our plummeting dollar?
It's looking really scary, where are people going to work?

Even as a kid I knew not to go anywhere near employment in retail. The internet has changed everything. People aren't going to pay high dollar for mid-level retailers with meh online shopping. There's a reason why Old Navy, H&M, Uniqlo are killing it. It's either high end luxury brands or low end retailers. No room for those in the middle.
Also, the Canadian Dollar is going up so companies start cutting. The problem in Canada is we rely heavily on real estate. We're not really leading in any other sector. Not oil anymore. Government is trying to kill the real estate market on top of that.
Loblaws recently expanded so that likely didn't go too well for them if they're cutting jobs. Too many people at the top making bad decisions and it costs the workers jobs.

I agree
And I won't be shocked if Hudson's Bay is next esp with Nordstrom and Saks moving in
And the 15 min is going to make things worse, get used to more kiosks.
My local McDonald's has like 4 kiosks and just one cash

I don't think they'll let Hudson's Bay to fall
you shouldnt even be eating from there in the first place![]()
Those changes have nothing to do with the minimum wage, fast-food companies, grocers etc will invest big money in automation regardless. Theyre far ahead of the curve, in the U.S. where minimum wage is far below Canada's. B-b-but Wynne brought on the robotsAnd the 15 min is going to make things worse, get used to more kiosks.
